Relatives in adventure mode.
« on: August 08, 2009, 10:27:10 pm »

When you are born in adventure mode you are currently born of unknown parentage (even the legends mode says so).

What if the game automatically chooses a married couple in the town (there are tons of them) and makes you their son/daughter. There could also be a small chance that you are born as a bastard child and only have a mother. Because other NPC's already have established families, you could just enter into theirs (their brother becomes your uncle, their parents become your grandparents).

People related to you recognize it and show signs of it in their dialogue with you. Your brothers and sisters would be more willing to follow you on adventures, and all of your relatives would give you discounts if they owned a shop.

If you die while a relative is in your group (and the relative survives) then instead of being impaled on a spike or left there to rot, the legends mode would say that your relative buried you in your home town. You could also do the same to them by picking up their body and talking to a relative of theirs.

The entity positions could include family bond. For instance, a goblin might not be as attached to his family members as a human or dwarf.

I like this idea. It'd go a great way towards contributing to the verisimilitude of adventure mode.

Also, if you settle in a town, you should be able to marry and have children of your own after a time (like, you settle as a peasant, resume adventuring, and suddenly have a buttload of kids.)

In addition, there could be a way to access your family info (perhaps a separate tab in your character screen) that would show the names, locations (what town they live in), and professions of your living family members.

It would start out with just the info on the relatives that are in the town you start in, but if you choose the "family" option in the dialogue menu while speaking to a family member and learn about a relative that isn't in your info tab then it would add them to it.

This way you could feel like you actually know your character's family (unless your race has a very low family bond, which would make it much harder to get info on them).

Or, for the less familial type adventurers, if you visit every brothel (or other willing partner, I suppose) in every town and have dozens of kids all over the world, it will only show you the ones that you know about.

Or, I suppose, if you're playing a female character, there's a lot that could be done with that - not that it seems the kind of thing Toady wants to implement, as that might come a little too close to putting sex in a video game no matter how you slice it.

It'd be interesting to have adventurers be "retconned" in as random children, but it could lead to some fantastic hilarities - such as being born a prince, or the son of a warrior who's in a faraway land.

That's actually pretty cool. And you could embark on a self-appointed quest to find your family.

Though I'm willing to bet that someone will use them as meat shields  ;D

Even better! Incest is Wincest!

On a more serious note, this idea sounds pretty cool, and adds to the bunch of things Toady (armok be with him) wanted to do with adventure mode. On the topic of having kids, you should just be able to get in a relationship through talking and doing deeds for lovers, and then ask for a baby, just like asking for them to join you. They would refuse based on how much they like you/payment/how many you've already had with them. That way whores would increase the price, lovers would increase the deed requirements, and spouses would only give you kids if you didn't have too many already.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

It seems like there is a need to strike a balance between control over player characters in adventure mode and the storylike coincidences inherent in a fantasy plot.  I personally favor a sandbox, everything-as-you-like approach, and let the player exercise self-control.  As to how that would apply to relations, you could opt to choose, say, random lineage (for the hardcore players), 'noble' lineage (born under whatever circumstances to a family that is either a ruling power or has a high-ranking family member), or mysterious, unconnected lineage.

Perhaps the most sandboxie method would allow players to choose any potential child from the population of their chosen subgroup, and if they want a storybook adventure, they could explore the family lines through some legends-like menu.

Well, if you think about it, the origins of your Adventure mode characters are pretty "traditional".

Hero of unknown parentage... Guided by forces unknown... Slays powerful enemies.

All you need is a prophecy about killing your father. A self-fulfilling one.

I would want this just to ask complete stranges to make babies.

Pavot McUman: Please bear my children!
Peasant: Get away from me! GUARDS!

Pavot McUman: Please bear my children!
Farmer: But im a guy!

Pavot McUman: Please bear my children!
Demon warlord: ... and I though those tantacle guys were weird.
