Dwarf Companion questions
« on: March 04, 2008, 12:22:00 pm »

I was poking around the forum and noticed that it was possible to get combat descriptions like you in adventure mode. This sounds VERY cool to me. I looked around the wiki and found that Dwarf Companion can give, "combat reports." Is this what I'm looking for. If so, is it easy to get working and compatible with this version? Any help from you vets would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, 0.10, the latest version for Python 2.4, is compatible with this version.  Procedure for using it is listed on its wiki page.
Make sure you don't download Python 2.5 though, because DC for it is only at 0.8 and AFAIK incompatible with this version.

If you download python 2.5 and then those three modules it still works, because I believe that's what I did.

It's not really fun to see a ton of "wrestler kicks wrestler in the lower leg", when you have a lot of sparring military.
But it's fun to see something like "-wooden bolt- strikes goblin in the chest. The goblin's heart has been pierced". I like to watch the damage my dorfs do to the ene,y, but it takes to pause the game every "tick" and check their wound status... With this option on it's much funnier.

Also it helps to notice a few more things: 1) occasional combat you were not aware off, to quuickly solve the situation; 2) if there's a cave river+chasm under your feet, you can understand it easily by a lot of "lizardman falls into a deep chasm" messages.

Yea it does sound cool. I tried for about a hour today after work, but could not get it to work. I tried the 2.4 and the 2.5 and cant seem to get it working. I'm not very computer literate, which is a real bummer. I saved all the files to my desk top, but when I click on the dfcompanion I get a window that looks like a old dos screen that flashes some text too fast for me to read and then does nothing.  Its no big deal but if anyone can offer some advice that gets it working I will name one of my  Hammer Dwarfs after you. Then you can roam the wilderness being cruel to cute furry animals.

Bumping because I'm getting the same problem as the guy above.  Command prompt comes up, some text scrolls by and then it disappears (crashes, presumably) before I can read or even get a screenshot of the error messages.  I did install Python 2.5.2 and the GTK runtime.  Do I need to unzip DC anywhere special?

Dwarf Companion, like all the other utilities, works by hooking into DF's memory. DF must be running and preferably in Fortress Mode before you run Dwarf Companion.

If you're doing that already, then I dunno. Maybe write on the DC author's wiki page?

To narrow the problem: do you use Vista?

It's not working here to. To see the error message, you can point to dfcompanion_prototype.py, open the context menu and 'Edit with IDLE'. Then activate the window showing the code of dfcompanion_prototype.py and press F5 to run. After that a error traceback will be shown in the shell window, with the event causing the failure on bottom. Unfortunately I see a german message, but it's something about a refused attempt to access a memory region (function ReadProcessMemory).

Edit: Got it to work nvrm.

I ran it as an exe when dwarf fortress was running in fortress mode and it opened a black screen. The screen had stuff about loading and then it opened companion. Thx for the help
