Brutal Legend up in the air
« on: August 01, 2008, 08:46:44 pm »

Surprized nobody else made this thread.

Given the constituency, I figured the DF-playing crowd would be interested in the fate of Tim Schafer's rock odyssey in the making Brutal Legend.  Activision recently bought up Vivendi Games, who in turn were the publisher for Double Fine (Tim's outfit).  Activision announced they were not picking up all of Vivendi's publishing deals, including Brutal, and other stuff like the nearly complete Ghostbusters game.

Naturally, the big licenses will probably have new publishers inside of a few months, but many a great game in the making has died in the crossfire of legal warfare.  At any rate, this was something I thought you would want to know.

The announcement.
The good news.

Oh come on...  They're giving up a World in Conflict expansion and a 50 vs. Terrorists game for Spyro and Crash Bandicoot?  Those cash-cows have been milked dry for years...  Prototype looks like it could either be beyond freaky awesome or downright awful.  I'm leaning towards awful, to protect my fragile psyche from too much disappointment.

Necromancy! The soundtrack has been revealed officially..read by an australian while Tim Schafer /races to solve a Rubick's Cube before she finishes/.

This is the awesomest thing ever, and the most METAL soundtrack imaginable.

Now this is necromancy I can get behind.

Wikipedia has the full list.  Holy balls, that's some metal.  Marylin Manson, lots of Motorhead, Children of Bodom (wearing their shirt as I type this), KMFDM, Rob Zombie.  From Iced Earth and Dark Tranquility to Ratt and Skid Row.  And Tenacious D (obviously), Dethklok, and DragonForce.

I am pretty surprised by the lack of Iron Maiden and Metallica.  I guess there's only so much money you can throw at a licensing deal when EA is pissed off at you.  Eh, Metallica are a bunch of dicks anyway.  Only one Megadeth song is rather curious, considering they were willing to do voice acting for Duck Dodgers.  And yet EA goes to the trouble of licensing Skid Row, and it's not Slave to the Grind, their only tune worth listening to.

And no mention of the song that no one would have ever heard if Tim Schafer hadn't commissioned a soundtrack.  That's just a goddamn shame.

"There is presently no planned PC version of the game, as Schafer has stated that the game is primarily an action game and "meant to be on a console"."

I understand that NOT EVERY GAME CAN HAVE METALLICA IN IT...despite THAT being my hopes.

But no Iron Maiden in a game about METAL?

That...is absurd.

Reading a couple interviews, that was obviously on Schafer's mind too.  When it comes to licensing one person's crap to put in another person's crap, there's a world of difference between what's cool and what's possible.  Thinking about it, I can't recall anything with Iron Maiden cross-content.  They always did seem kind of stuck up.

Stupid EA.  Stupid Schafer.  "Why all the hate on consoles?"  Because I can't afford one you ass!

I have my brother's old xbox 360, so I suppose I can have it shipped to Aqizzar by Rocktober, but you'll want to have it looked at, since it seems to have a habit of scratching CDs 'till you can't play them.
No, wait, just remembered it was a pal.
