Migrants Always Arrive At The Worst Times
« on: July 20, 2009, 07:26:15 am »

Hi all,
I joined a long time ago, but this is my first post. I haven't played DF much but I know enough to get a basic (very very basic) fortress running.
Basically, this is a quick short summary of what happened on the fortress I had today. It's not really a story, since I'll just tell you what happened - so if I wrote this in the wrong place, please move the topic, thank you :)

Today, I decided to create a fortress, which ended up being in a great location, surrounded by various enemies that I've never encountered before so had no idea how to handle it. Things like fire imps, giant cave swallows, etc. Yeah I've only made two fortresses before (both being abandoned by me since I got bored).

Needless to say, after about 30 minutes of playing, two of my dwarves were dead by Giant Cave Swallow.

Not to be deterred, I kept playing with 5 dwarves left, since both my miners were still alive -the only two dead being a replaceable farmer and woodcutter.

Played for about 2 years in game.

And then my other farmer died from overdose of swallow.

Which sent my miner into a tantrum and he died of starvation soon after. (I don't really understand if he died because of the tantrum?)

So I was left with three - after two years of no migrants.

Since I thought it was too hard a location for me, I decided I wanted to have some fun with my dwarves - well, not really fun, just try and kill the three remaining.

So I set my remaining miner to mine a huge room next to the magma pipe to see if I could cause a cave-in. (It didn't occur to me to mine INTO the magma until writing this)
Then I set my two other dwarves to wall themselves into the fortress, followed by walling off the food stockpile, followed by walling each other off in tiny squares.

Well, the two walled-in dwarves died soon enough (you know, after 30 minutes of them looking for vermin to eat).

But the miner was getting hungry, so he stopped my huge cave-in project and decided to go scavenging for food. So I drafted him into the military.

Now, the previously mentioned giant cave swallow now had three kills to its name (as it had kills it had a name). I thought it could easily kill a fourth so I moved my newly drafted miner to it. I was very wrong. My miner basically took down the giant cave swallow in one punch, took down some fire imps, and was only stopped by another fire imp who punched the dwarf in the head (and damaged his brain). So my poor military miner was now unconscious next to the magma pipe. Along comes a bat.

My miner springs up and proceeds to have an epic duel with the bat. This involves tearing at ankles, throats, and wrists. Then, my miner collapses into unconsciousness. The bat continues to tear at his limbs and eyes, and suddenly collapses. Poor bat tried so hard to kill the dwarf that he knocked himself unconscious.

So there I have my last dwarf and a bat bleeding to death out in the sun, and I'm waiting for the dwarf to die, when I receive the worst message I wanted to receive at that time:

Some migrants have arrived!

And it was 15 of them.

Imagine immigrating to a new settlement to find an outpost full of corpses and an unconscious miner and giant bat locked in a duel to the death.

Thief:"Quiet kitty, Qui-"
Cat:"THIEF! Protect the hoard from the skulking filth!"
The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Versus your average vomit, blood, mud, rock ring, vermin infested hole in the ground?
It's hard to choose, really.

This is community games and stories. That looks like a story to me, and might I say quite a funny one.

I'm pretty sure "stories" is meant to imply "fanfiction."

But, whatever. It's not hurting anything.

I remember getting bored with a fort, so I flooded it with magma from the top and bottom.

I deconstructed multiple doors (I'm obsessed with sticking doors everywhere) to let the magma through, though after a while the dwarves stopped removing the barricades protecting them from fiery death for some reason...

Anyway, if I remember correctly, it ended with an insane dwarf locked in prison, multiple dwarves locked in an archery range, some dwarves trapped in their bedrooms, one berserk dwarf throwing barrels around in the food stockpile...

Then the migrants arrived.

At this point, I just let them stand on top of the magma-filled hole in the ground and let them all starve to death.

Most fun I've had with this game ever.

(I need to play more.)

Epic duel between my miner and a fire imp, Fire imp throws fire ball, kills miner and sets forest on fire then immigrants come get set on fire then decide their thirsty. At the same time everyone was drinking. lets just say everyone died.
