Does dust flow through fortifications?
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:36:26 am »

I'm playing the dark dwarves mod, and I'm working on a way to harvest lots of chunks from my animals before butchering them. I'm thinking bloodstone barbed flail traps would work very well, but I want to make sure that the cave in doesn't crush the animal. My current plan is to drop the stone on the other side of the fortification from my drop site like so

############        S = support
#       FTTTTTT#         # =wall
#  S   FTTTrTTT#        T = Trap
#       FTTTTTT#         F = fortification
############

Would that work, or would the fortifications stop the dust from knocking the animal out?

Just guessing here, but I'd say its almost certain that it would flow through. Test with miasma?

A raising drawbridge to form a wall might give you the protection you want.

Weapon traps won't make chunks I'm pretty sure.  Best way is to get animals to attack.  Make a hostile wolf pit and throw dogs in.  Or a dog pit and throw hostile wolves in, which is much easier.

Don't know about the dust, but if you want chunks you want "slashing" weapons.  In vanilla, the best slashing weapons for traps are either a Giant Axe Blade (if the targets are larg-ish) or the Large Serrated Blade (if the targets are smaller).  10 of those in a trap should provide a good spray of limbs (for bones and meat) and chunks.

(If "bloodstone barbed flails" are slashing, then maybe that will work too, not familiar with them.  But I'd bet the LSB would still be better w/ 3 attacks per.)

Yes, dust goes through. Part of my first knock-out room for caging.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Grates/bars should work also.

Can't you get a whole lot of chunks by dropping things 7-20 z levels?

Nope, execution towers only produce limbs (and lots of them, often flying 5 Z-levels into the air), not chunks.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
