My military is full of idiots.
« on: August 08, 2009, 05:00:23 pm »

I just had a axman and hammer man watch my legendary blacksmith get his ass burnt off by a skeletal fire imp while they stood around and chuckled. They were all of maybe 10 squares away, told to chase enemies and positioned right beside the magma pool. Is there any way to make them actually, I dunno, ATTACK THINGS?! Having them on patrol seems to work ok, but they get dangerously close to the edge all the time and one as already fallen in. So what should I do? Besides just build traps everywhere.

Set them to attack dangerous wild animals?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

They already do. Its like their vision is is so terrible they just don't notice the hulking demons and skeletal beasts wandering past them.

This actually, make a second save as backup, then abandon the fort and go there as adventurer, you will find that sight range is actually very small underground, and strangely marksdwarves  are not effected by this, while meelee fighters seem to ignore everything they can't directly see.

I'd suggest stationing them closer..Like 2 or 3 spots away from their target.

Restrict traffic with d-o-r on the ledges they patrol. Include marksdwarves in your squads.

Sometimes your military just doesn't notice units until they get attacked by them. This seems to happen only with local units (i.e. that were on the map when you arrived).

On the plus side, fire imps of any stripe are complete wimps and can easily be taken out by any random dwarf you draft. So just draft your blacksmith and he'll probably explode the imp with his untrained wrestling.

Here's an idiotic military for you: last night I decided to pop open my fort's HFS for kicks. I had an army of 6 champions in 2 squads. I assign both squads outside the HFS, but one only ever shows up. The other squad is busy doing nothing in the meeting room.
And here's where it gets bad- I open the HFS, and quite naturally my 3 champions on station get overrun. Feeling psychotic, I draft every remaining dwarf and send them into the hall leading to the HFS. Lazy Squad is still shooting the breeze in the meeting hall. Only after more than half my fort is dead does the genius leader of my glorious Lazy Squad enter combat. He suffers a broken arm and retreats to rest. Fun.

I've had 70% of my army decide they need to go take a nap right as goblins invade. WAKE UP DAMN IT

I constantly try to set things up so my non-elites can get some kills instead of my squad of hardened champions.

One or more of my champions always seem to decide they don't like this pathing of patrol between the guard towers and fort door and run off into the hills.  The only thing being in the hills being goblins.  Of course, one champion still wins being outnumbered 12:1 by non-elite goblins, but it defeats the purpose of trying to get kills for other guys  ::)

I've had squads of 20 where I've gone through the entire list trying to find someone to make squad leader that wasn't drinking, sleeping, or picking up gear in the middle of a siege and failed  >:(

Conclusion: Dwarf behaviour needs to be improved A LOT in the update after the next one (since the goals for that are already set and mostly achieved, if I remember correctly).

Isn't there going to be some sort of "alert" system, which could potentially make dorfs more... well, alert?

An "if siege, change behavior" would be great  8)

I just think that when dwarves are on duty they should only eat or drink if they have a backpack or waterskin (btw, how about a wineskin instead). When they get hungry or thirsty, they should start sending you alerts, and they should only go back to the barracks for food/water/sleep when they're about to die. But that's just me.

I think this should only happen when there's a siege or an attack of some other sort. Normally having them wander off to eat or drink isn't too terrible, but during a siege it's massively annoying. I've had soldiers simply give up and decide to go eat just because a monster wandered a little too far out of their sight.

I was facing an goblin siege once and thinking it was no problem I stationed my military outside and left for a drink.  During that time I ran out of booze so one by one, my entire army pathed into the goblin siege to get a drink from the river.  If it wasn't for the fact that my miners found some gems I would of lost that fort.
