Make Halberds two handed weapons
« on: February 22, 2008, 11:56:00 pm »

According to everyones favourite trivia vault, the haldberd is a two-handed weapon. I think the game should reflect likewise.

It is a two-handed weapon, at least for humans.  Goblins just don't pay attention to the fact they they can't actually carry the damn things, let alone with a shield.

But... But I'm a human and I'm wielding a halberd and shield!

Yeah.  You can use a bow and a shield, too.  You can even use a shield and a shield.  You can use anything and a shield, no matter how big/small.

You can use an iron statue and a shield, for instance.

The concept of 'holding stuff' is kinda skewed in the game right now.

Maybe shields work by having bands on the back which you put your arm through? That'd free up your arms.

99.99% of shields use straps of leather or some such to attach the shield to your arm. Other wise the shield would slide right off   :)

Its how archers can shoot a bow and hold a shield at the same time.

Not really, shield are heavy and bulky.

On the subject of carrying too much stuff.  I made a playable demon and I'd constantly bite enemies and rip chunks off of them, and keep them stored in my mouth.  Then I'd throw them at foes.  I have this image of a grinning  Pit Fiend from DnD with puffed up cheeks and lips dripping blood start spitting chunks of flesh at enemies like a machine gun or at least, some cartoon character imitating one.  :D

Yes, but at least not impossible to handle with the two-handers.

Shield:  Large and bulky personal wall, very heavy and almost impossible to handle with a bow or other large weapon.  Has leather straps to help keep it attached to the arm, one of which is held by the hand of the arm holding the shield.

Buckler:  Small dueling shield, which can either be strapped solely to the wrist/lower arm, or held by one hand.  Smaller, lighter, faster, and possible to carry/use with a large weapon.

A normal sized person is NOT able to effectively use a full sized shield and a two handed weapon at the same time. Even if weight weren't an issue, it would still severely limit the movement of one arm... which rather defeats the purpose of wielding a weapon with both of them. A buckler can be used by an archer but to use it with any other two handed weapon is silly: the weapon is your shield.
