Actually the 8 recruits WERE migrants and that was the entry ceremony to the fort: lock them with food, water well, no beds and 8 Adamantine spears(which are great at killing, and if you don't die, you won't have lopped off limbs and probably spinal injuries) and only recoverable champions(or a lone spearmaster) can leave.
I did the 100 long sword fight and currently have 22(15swordsdwarves and 7 swordmasters) left, all miserable:

Is all of the red in that picture caused by blood?  If so, I think we can safely call that a success no matter what is the case otherwise.

Ii wish! It's a smoothed floor for the arena(of course some of it is blood)
