Cats
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:46:09 pm »

I just had a ratman chase a cat all the way across the map then the cat turned around and killed the ratman. Is this supposed to happen bcause if so I can't kill any more cats.
Edit:the ratman is still alive but has a red spine and the cat just died from something.
Edit2: 5 ratmen came from and killed the cat then 20 troglodytes came and destroyed the other cat.

sadly those hostiles did you a favour. Good on the cat though, trying to prove its worth.

Is this supposed to happen ...

Depends what you mean by "supposed to".

Cats are slightly smaller than ratmen (and size matters a lot in non-weapon combat), but do more damage.

Combat, however, has a large randomizing factor in it - we regularly see the posts about how an untrained farmer killed the Giant Cave Spider, or how the wardog killed an entire ambush - with {all the DF players} x {all their games} x {all the combats in each game}, someone is going to roll a "20" six times in a row - it just happens, film at 11, get over it.

So, yes - it's not a bug, it's supposed to happen, just not very often.

Note that this combat thing can be abused, say, if a battle didn't go the right way or Urist mcWrestler with a huge friendslist dodges into magma, you can just rewind to your last save and do it again, in a way that has a happy ending.

Or if you're a sadist, save just before a dragon walks into your 10/10 masterwork weapon trap, keep rewinding until every single part of it's body gets cut off...Or just to see him get chopped into bits more then one time.

At one of my older forts, I had a cat with a kobold kill to it's name, I locked a kobold into a small pit and then kept tossing cats in till it died..For Science!

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)
