If someting goes seriously wrong (earthquake, vermin ate the food, the baron likes crystal glass and mass executions,..), the player should be able to bootstrap himself fairly quickly (if he keeps a few essential priorities straight).

I'm not sure about that... Do we really want to make losing your fortress difficult? If losing is fun...
It's fun, but losing your fortress before the first year is over 75% of the time is most certainly not fun. If you can keep the fortress running in the same place, cleaning up the damage, you'll be reliving the fun many times. If it's over, it's over. How longer a fortress grows, the more complex and unexpected disasters can get.

Then you're missing the point of FUN. FUN is getting obliterated by carp at embark . FUN is certainly going two months of game time only to have yourself starve to death because you play a BONECARN race, and all you have is prickle berrys.

Losing is FUN. Not losing after you "have a good go at it". Its FUN period. =/
I'm not stopping you to embark on a glacier with only silk slippers.. There still might be something in the water that sneaks out the first time your dwarves sleep and eats them, but encountering that as a matter of course is as fun as five nobles who like lead.. and neither your civ or the map have it.

More difficulty! More moar MOAR!

This suggestion is great. I completely approve.

It'd be nice to have a big red "HURT ME MORE" button so that when you get things cranking along nicely you can call in goblin invasions etc.

Dwarf fortress is a peice of cake, I honestly dont see where people get the idea its hard.

This. The UI is awkward, but that is really it. A little patience and experimentation and before you know it you are bored because there is no challenge in DF as it is now.

challenge yourself. You can't expect people to hand you everything on a platter. Vanilla DF gives people the chance to start up and understand what's going on before allowing them to plunge themselves into greater difficulty. Hell, embarking without trees is difficult the first time round. Learn to challenge yourself.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Are there not goblin invasions already? Are you saying the game should just openly admit that it's not an interesting challenge?

challenge yourself. You can't expect people to hand you everything on a platter.

That's just pathetic. I can play any of a thousand games out there that do hand me strategic challenges "on a platter", including old 2D versions of DF. I have trouble believing that "sabotage yourself half the time so that it's not too easy" is Toady's grand vision for the game.

Currently, plump helmets are manna from heaven, half the dwarves in everyone single one of your fortresses are legendary and immigrants are a dime a dozen. That's all just a matter of numerical adjustment to make these challenging.
