Minor Moods?
« on: August 08, 2009, 10:29:48 am »

I'd like to see persistent unhappy thoughts (some of them, anyway) lead to spontaneous low-level moods, where dwarves act autonomously to correct what's bugging them.  Tired of the same old booze?  Been tired of it for months?  Spring into action, commandeer a still and make something you like.  Upset at the lack of work last season? Occupy your time with some random engraving of any exposed stone.  Shoes worn out?  No replacements available?  Grab some leather and whip a pair up, even though you're a crappy leatherworker who doesn't have that labor enabled.

You know, I kind of like this. It gives a motivation to make dwarves happy, other than to avoid berserk ones running around; if they're unhappy, they might use up some rare or useful material!

I actually had a thought similar to this a while ago about the dwarven economy. Dwarves are basically communists - the government owns everything, pays the dwarves for doing work for the state, and sells everything produced at a given rate. Things like your 'minor moods' would be more likely to occur in a capitalist state, where a dwarf would, for example, buy leather from a shop, make shoes from it, and sell them to someone else or wear them. The downside is I can't work out a good way for a capitalist society to exist in DF without being dangerously volatile, so I never posted the idea.

"Minor Moods" might be better applied as an expansion of uncontrolled/unordered behavior; the framework is simple enough (if number X reaches limit Y, then execute random order from set Z) that it can be replicated without too much trouble.

One of the problems, though, is materials availability, as stated; but more importantly, announcing the job change. It's one thing for dwarves to be more autonomous, but it's another for them to subvert players completely.
