Does eating masterwork meals give the cook unhappy thoughts?

And ditto with masterwork drinks. Just something that hit me.

Nope.

I've heard letting them rot in the 2d version would... I don't know if that was ever true or if it's still true though. I don't think it is, but I can't say for sure I've had masterwork meals rot.

Not that it matters, the penalty for losing masterworks has all but been removed unless the creator has only made a small number.

Yeah, don't let them rot, but they can be eaten/traded with impunity.
Also, look out for masterpiece bolts.

it hasn't been removed, the effect has just been spread out among all master work items the particular dwarf has ever produced. to achieve the full effect, the dwarf must lose 100% of all his masterwork items.  If he looses 50%, the effect is cut by half.

Okay, so my weaponsmiths should be perfectly fine if their masterwork steel bolts are lost due to being fired (On account of there being hundreds), and from people deciding to munch masterworks.

To my knowledge, dwarves don't care if their masterwork items are lost in acceptable ways. They don't care if masterwork bolts break when fired, but they flip out if you melt them down. They don't care if masterwork food is eaten, but they get mad if it rots. So they only get mad if their masterpieces are lost in non-kosher ways.

Not "perfectly" - the bad thought will be significantly diminished, but still there.

Which is why I said "all but removed" and not removed. It's simply a non-issue and ignorable for the vast majority of professions due to the extreme rate they crank out masterworks at high skill levels.

As far as masterwork bolts go, there was a bug (feature?) in the 2d version where stuck-in bolts being carried off the map counted as stolen which would cause the creator to flip out. I don't know if it's been changed or not, but if your dwarf has been making lots of them then it's not something you have to worry about anyway. The bad thought should be diminished to the point where it won't even move his mood down a level (unless he is right on the edge) so there is no practical effect.

Edit: removed double word

Hyperbole. As good as fine, because the two of them have made every single weapon in the fort, with the exception of the contents of a single weapon trap with a bunch of elf junk in.

Regarding bolts, meals, and drinks.

Masterwork bolts that you use to kill goblins outside the fort will stay whole. This means that kobolds and other thieves can steal them. That counts towards the unhappy thought count.

Same for meals (bloody racoons) and drinks (to this day I'm not sure how a grizzly bear manages to sneak into my fort and steal my beer).

Cool. That just struck me as hilarious for some reason.
