I'm sorry if this has been asked/expanded upon before.  I seem to like recreating older threads in newer words.  But anyway, is there a set 'army rank' idea already planned or is it more fluid?  If it's fluid, then I've a suggestion.

While as an Outpost, only one person may be above another.  Therefore, you have one squad leader above, say a max of four or five members, but no one can be 'above' him.  If that squad is activated and the leader is sleeping, that squad is considered 'down' until the leader awakens (as orders pass through leaders rather then to individual dwarves).

Once you reach Hamlet, you can place 1 dwarf above 2 squad leaders.  He is the lieutenant, call him something dwarfy.  Shieldbearer or something, since a shield is usually used in the left han- wait, aren't dwarves all left handed?  Then he's a Rightenant and a Shieldbearer thus.  So you've made a very small company, I guess.

Anyway, it goes like that.  The number of ranks and the ability to put the military on 'full alert' or just individual squads would be dependent on the size of the fortress itself.

Anywayth the whole hierarchic system has to be thought again. There is no advantages in putting a hierarchy in your army at the moment given this :
when a military dwarf drinks, sleeps or goes on break (not sure if they can), every dwarf under them just hang around them and wait for them to finish.

So if your general, who has all 5 squads under his orders, sleeps, no one will go on patrol or spar or anything.

They definitely need their priorities redone.
