Magma smelter

When i set mine up i use channels to bring lava directly beside it but it says it needs magma below one of the 8 boundry tiles.

You need to build your magma smelters not beside the magma channels but on top of them. Yes, right over them.

You can put a magma forge over lava, but not a metalsmith's forge, as that is the fuel powered forge as opposed to the magma powered forge.

Note that if you didn't filter the magma going into your channels (ideally using a fortification), you would be well advised to build the workshop so that an impassable tile (shows up as a darker green X) covers the hole you dug into the magma channel.

Nope i tried to channel it but i remembered that i have a room that all my dwarves where in would be flooded in lava when i just channeled the last tile. Then i reclaimed few dwarves die tantrum spiral dwarves kill tantrum dwarf other dwarf goes beserk.
