The most basic concept of a bed is a place to sleep, i.e. a spot on the ground. A piece of cloth to wrap oneself in is the most important item, that the first seven will conceivably bring with them in the wagon. Pillows, mattresses, frames etc. are additional.

Ideally, dwarves should just pick a spot in their own room to sleep, obtaining sheets, pillows, bed frame etc as needed and available. Forcing a location and specific items as player should be optional.

Just like beds themselves. You can allocate a room and specific beds to dwarves, or you can let them do it themselves and find a room that's right for them. Optional specification is good because then you won't have Urist Mcnoskills taking that legendary bed sheet for himself.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

Hmmm... I hadn't stopped to consider the cultural differences in sleeping places.  Shame on me.  Perhaps what each Dwarf considers a "proper bedroom" is based on their Civ.  Or their personality.  This could get annoying for those who are used to making one kind of bedroom then, in their next fortress, may have to make another.  But whatever.

Or, perhaps it could work like containers, where you can choose to place bedding, and then get to pick from a list that includes all types of bedding available - or just the pieces thereof, but I'm still not sure I like the idea of having to manually improve objects I've already placed (although it would make certain things really easy.  Hey, you!  Gemsetter!  Come encrust this noble's *adamantine cabinet* so you don't waste precious gems on -Orthoclase Throne-s!).  And, of course, there's the situation Rowanas mentioned about Urist Mcnoskills.

I also like the idea of tents for adventure mode!  And sleeping bags.  Sleeping bags should totally be in there somewhere, particularly as a cold-weather sleeping option.  Like mittens/cloaks, but for sleeping.

Even if it's un-dwarfy to use cushions and tapestries, other civs may still use them, so they ought to fit right in.

i think the best way to implement the idea of bed sheets and such is to leave beds the way they are, just using wood. then once they are placed into a room and assigned to your dwarf, then you can choose bed sheets and pillows. they would give a boost to the room value, and it could generate a happy thought for the dwarf. it'd be a small boost for your run of the mill pig tail fabric, and a much larger boost for your fancey-pants cave spider silken fabric.

the idea for carpets and tapestries would work pretty much the same. choose your fabric, weave it, dye it, and place it in a room. because things like that are alot bigger, they would previde much bigger boosts to room value. they could be perfect for covering any constructed walls in the fort to boost value, as they cant be engraved. nobles might even demand to get tapestries or bedcovers for their rooms. all in all, i love the idea! i want to have a huge wall surrounding the entrence to my fort, with a long path with banners hanging the way. having tapestries hanging from the dining room and throne rooms would also be awsome.

And then all we need is more dye colors so we can give dwarves thier favorite colored Sheets/carpets

A late addition to the idea. We should also have Draperies, for all our glass windows. :P
