What do you mean hatches don't operate under pressure!!!
« on: July 30, 2009, 10:33:06 pm »

So, I was bored and unable to build a fort interesting enough to hold my attention until this "Fun Stuff" I keep hearing about, I finally decided to build a death-trap fort for drowning my dwarves one by one. (Yes maybe I am a pixel-sadist)

Unfortunately, my drowning chamb- I mean bedrooms were flawed

I built a resevoir above the bedroom floor with a channel and floor hatch above each bedroom.  I attached these floor hatches to individual levels all located in a lever room.

Showtime: I filled the resevoir and pulled the first lever.......nothing :(  Fortunately I built a master-flood switch and flood the whole fortress (It was purposely built 1 level below a river, it flooded from the ground up)

Sorry for bothering any people who feel solely entitled to this forum, I am just frustrated  :D

We're pretty good with new people here, don't worry ;)
On the subject of "Fun Stuff", some may refer to Fun™, which usually means you modded cats to have a temperature of 3x the suns surface, got killed by goblins, flooded the world with magma, or any combination thereof.
Flooding your fort with water is also Fun™.

The other "Fun stuff", the one you were propably waiting for, is called HFS, or Hidden Fun Stuff.
For your own sake please don't look this up, as experiencing it for the first time is vital for truly enjoying Dwarf Fortress.

HFS will be unlockable in the mountain regions, more specifically one per mountain tile in the region view upon embark, the screen in the middle.
If you understand what I'm trying to say :p

I get the feeling you're new though, yes? In that case, welcome aboard ;)

Odd, I haven't had that problem with floor hatches before- the ones rigged to flood my trade depot have worked every time.

Still, retractable bridges work just as well if the problem persists.

I am sorry, this was a joke, if a bad one.  i was just being sarcastic, hence the :D

Here is a bad simplified interpretation if anybody is currious (I am, why didn't this work?)

|: Wall
_: Wall
0: Dug out Floor
H: Hatch EDIT: build above channel.
~: Water (7/7)
B: Bed
T: Door

Top Floor (Reservoir):

|H~|_|
|__|

Bottom Floor (Bedroom)
|__|
|00|
|B0T
|__|

After filling the Reservoir I pulled a lever to open the hatch and lock the door and.... the door closed but the hatch remained open

I also had troubles with an auto-filling well that worked using a pressure plate.

P.S. why is the text box auto-scrolling to the top everytime I type a letter?

I've noticed that sometimes water pressure simple doesn't work properly.

I've had situation where I built a well, intending to use water pressure to boost the water level just below the well itself, but for some inexplicable reason the water does not move.

Tampering with the water level, such as using a few buckets, can sometimes fix this and get water pressure to work again.

Remember that water pressure pushed the water to one Z-level below the starting point, AND that pumps neutralize pressure.

I found those out the hard way, it sucked.

But I agree with you, water pressure never seems to be consistant to me

*winces* yeah, for a given value of "vital" and enjoying.
I still have nightmares about my first time breaching HFS...

Anyway, I had a similar idea/problem. If you want to hook up something similar again I suggest using 1x1 bridges set to retract instead of hatches. These in my experience work under all sorts of circumstances.

How many times did you pull the lever? The lever state for 'door shut' corresponds to 'hatch shut,' which is why the hatch didn't open. If you pull it again, it should open both the hatch and the door. If you're set on using one lever, you have to use a raising bridge instead of a hatch. The lever will lower the bridge-wall and close the door.

So you are saying that you can't have a single lever open a door and close a hatch at the same time?  That is extremely disapointing, but that does not explain another problem I had (again and again)

While building my well that was filled from a reservoir above I built a pressure plate that would shut off the supply (i.e. hatches in the reservoir under pressure), the pressure plate was triggered but the hatches did not shut, leading to a flooded hospital

The lever is more like OPEN/ACTIVE and CLOSE/INACTIVE, not TOGGLE.

I had an open floodgate already tied to a lever, and then also connected that lever to a separate floodgate. Pulling the lever afterwards closed the open floodgate but did not open the second floodgate. Subsequent pulls opened and closed both floodgates simultaneously.

I lost a trade-depot area like that the first time. :(

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

This.  (Altho', there are some objects that do "toggle".)

However, you can achieve the same effect if you are clever with drawbridges and doors/hatches attached to the same lever.  While a lever will "close" a door/hatch, it will "lower" a drawbridge - and that opens a path to whatever was in the tunnel behind the drawbridge (like fluids).  Play with it, it's easily worked around.

Some? Besides gears, what else is there?

Gears.

Yeah. There are ways to build a "reverser" system out of pressure plates, bridges, and sometimes pumps, but they are complicated.

And you probably set up the pressure plate wrong. It's complicated.

I don't get how I could of set the pressure plate up wrong, there isn't much to mess up, simply set trigger and place, unless the pressure plate tried to "open" my opened hatches, then never triggered again, which would suck...

But in my opinion this is an extremely simple thing to implement and I can't see I reason why it shouldn't be.
