Magma bridge.
« on: July 25, 2009, 09:24:27 am »

I created a lava-moat with a bridge at the entrance of my fort. My dwarves have happily been warming their toes on it for several seasons while exiting the fort for various tasks ... but my first autumn caravan just arrived and promptly caught fire halfway over the bridge, causing a nice spread that had three of my starting seven die. Anyone seen this? Is it some trade item that catches fire more easily than normal?

Maybe a fire snake lit their booze barrels

Just got the second caravan - it wasn't anything in the wagon that started the fire, it was the pack animals.  ??? I checked the wagon and the contents carefully, but they were all fine - only the horses and muskoxes were on fire.

Unless it's something that vaporized?

Check carefully how the caravans cross over your magma moat. It's likely that the pack animals are getting submerged in magma because of the way wagons work.

Can you be more precise? How do they get forced in - through the bridge, over the side? Although I'm fairly sure my last caravan ignited before the bridge, as they passed my bauxite magma floodgate ...

I can elaborate on this. It's a glitch.

See, wagons are 3 tiles long. So if you have a ramp with some lava, like this:

Code: [Select]

 _______
/Magma

And a wagon goes onto it, one tile of the wagon will be submerged in the lava. Cue smoke, fire and fun.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

Yeah if they need to go up a ramp to get to your bridge that'll be what's causing it.

Ahhh, thank you - part of the wagon ends up forced through the wall? Updated my death trap/access tunnels, so we'll see if the new plans work.
