more milkable creatures
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:33:00 pm »

I've been through all 14 pages of this form and haven't seen this topic mentioned, so if it has, my apologies.  I just wanted to ask for more milkable creatures (other than purring maggots).  I mean, we now have cows, horses, goats and various camels all of which produce milk in real life, so can we please have them milkable in the game?

I agree. I would like to be able to base a fort on agruculture and not on cranking out thoudands of crafts to buy things out. I'd love to be able to regularly sell animals, milk, cheese, and other animal byproducts.

I know this is dwarf fort, and not dwarf farmer, but why have it in the game if you don't flesh it out a bit.

I do wonder how he managed to break his own back though.

You could probably mod that in yourself by editing the raws. I don't know how, though.

I'm pretty sure the limitation on milking is hardcoded. The raws define milk from camels and cows, which traders can bring (even dwarf traders, which just makes the limitation all the more silly), but you can't milk them yourself.

I've tried to mod it in, but the dwarves milk both the males and the females, so something will have to be changed so that only the correct gender is milked.  Until then... bull-milk?

As long as your dwarfs are drinking it and not you, it's not your problem, now is it?

If there was a tag to make various animals only milkable by certain races, that'd be preferred.  I don't want my dwarves milking cows.  Cows are PETS, not sources of milk!  That's disgusting!  By the same token, I don't want humans milking purring maggots.

And by that token, if dwarves are the only civ that can milk purring maggots, then you'd damn well better be able to trade for them.

I think it will be implemented in a future version. The problem with milking at the moment, AFAIK, is that only creatures that can be carried (so yes, only purring maggots as for now) can be milked.
Which makes me curious how you manage to mod in milking with larger creatures.

Hmm. Taurine, one of the active substances in Red Bull, is naturally found in the testes of bulls (Taurus = bull in Latin). Don't panic all you powerdrinkers out there, the stuff in Red Bull is made artificially, not by milking the bull...

Nevermind.  I thought it had worked, but it doesn't now so must've been something else that was going on at the same time.  *sigh*
