I usually DIY for axes and a 2nd pick - which means I usually have my (non-magma) forge set up before the end of the first month, and have no problem fielding several full suits of steel armour and weaponry by the end of Summer (depending on finding iron, but that's near the top of the list.)  Armour, statues and mechanisms are most of my created wealth. 

(But, as I said elsewhere, I'm going to try the cook thing next - we'll see how that goes.)

Also, you might need the right kind of workshop. I ran into this with a smith not going to my forge. Turned out he was just to good to work at the magma forges like everyone else and wanted an old-school one.

If you have all of the workshops and it doesnt work, try the other varieties (magma/not magma).
