The solution to this is indeed orcs.  Killer spider riding swarms of them every summer and every winter.

I've got mine trained to sit patiently at the end of the bridge. Like cats waiting to be let in. All I did was take out TRAPAVOID so I could pressure plate the bridge to retract. After the first group falls in the rest hang out at the end shooting me with mean looks.

And then I greet them with bolts. From the bones of their brothers.
