jumping down and building down
« on: July 15, 2009, 09:37:13 am »

hello one and all,

2 questions that have occured to me, and hoped for clarification/report of results.

1.) can any creature/being in the DF world 'jump down'? that is to say, many tutorials and best-practice guides recommend walling around any areas that are channelled out from the surface (e.g. channelling above a farm plot to make it AG) so that bow-gobs can't fire in. But can any creature jump down? similarly, will a creature ever leap down into a magma vent/water vent/passageway with no roof, if there is a channelled tile above it?

2.) on http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Floodgate on the wiki it states that: "Dwarves must be able to stand orthogonally to the floodgate in order to build it." (a) Does this mean a dwarf can stand 'above' the floodgate to build it? (b) also, does this mean there are other buildings that can be built orthogonally rather than perpendicularly? or (c) am i misunderstanding orthogonally?

thank you in advance!

It is a total pain in the butt, but you gotta do what you gotta do if you want that upright candy weapon.
Your suspicions are nothing more than superstition

Yes.  And no.  AFAIK, no creature will deliberately jump down like that, with the notable exception of insane dwarves trying to end their miserable existence.

However, almost any creature can be knocked down a level by accident or during a fight.

Putting walls around channeled areas not only prevents bow-gobs from firing in, but also reduces the risk of one of your military knocking a Colossus down into the middle of your fort at the worst possible time...

Orthagonal basically does mean perpendicular.  In short, the dwarf must be able to stand N, S, E or W of it.  They cannot build one from above.

I heard flying monsters will need a walkable path to be able to actually fly to their destination, dont know if that is still true.

However, you should be able to floor over those farms just fine. Dew it with glass, if you feel less cheaty that way. But stone is fine.

The pathfinder works by walking paths to decide whether it's actually possible to reach the destination before it actually calculates a route to the destination (at which point flying paths are factored in) so yes, you'd be correct.

It's also possible to build a ramp incorrectly, so a dwarf can "jump down" onto it from the side, but cannot go up it to the next level.  Happens when the ramp dead-ends up into a wall on the next level up, but has floors leading off to the sides on that level.
