Linking screw pumps with gears
« on: September 20, 2009, 08:34:08 am »

Where does the gear need to be to power the pump?

Xx

where X is solid, x is not.

Does a gear connecting orthogonally with any tile or only the solid, or only the non-solid will power it?

Well if you do it to the non-solid portion, it will work.  If you do it to the solid portion, it will also work.  However, doing it to the solid portion leaves a diagonal open, so unless you're pumping down a hole, you'll flood yourself.

I don't think gears work diagonally.

On a side note, a gear is not strictly necessary - you can connect an axle directly to a pump and it'll still work fine.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You can connect gear assemblies to pumps vertically as well, if the gear assembly is over an open space above either of the two pump tiles.

This works for windmills, and probably vertical axles as well.

Oh, didn't know that.

You can connect a windmill and a waterwheel directly to the pump as well. Sure makes machinery easier if you can't get to stone quickly to build a mechanism.
