init help
« on: July 12, 2009, 08:23:05 pm »

So, first, I thought the files were .ini files, why do people call them inits?
This is my main question:
[CREATURE:GOAT_MOUNTAIN]
   [NAME:mountain goat:mountain goats:mountain goat]
   [TILE:'g'][COLOR:7:0:1]
   [LARGE_ROAMING]
   [POPULATION_NUMBER:15:30]
   [CLUSTER_NUMBER:1:4]
   [BENIGN][MEANDERER]
etc. etc.
So I get most of the tags here. What do the two numbers of population define? is that 15-30 at a given time? And does the cluster number translate the same way, 1-4 in a group?
And what does the "meanderer" tag do?

Edit: Found this somewhere else in the forum, thought I'd post it here.
And next time you make a world, remove the baby snatcher tag from goblins, and change their [INTELLIGENT] tag to [CAN_LEARN] and [CAN_CIV].
What will these new tags do?

Because they're not what you're talking about.

The one you are looking at it is called a RAW file, because it's in the RAW folder.

There are no .ini files, only .txt files. And the one people talk about is called "init.txt."

You should read the wiki (as a rule), but here on (guess...) "RAW" and (far less obvious) "creature token".  (For whatever reason, "tags" are called "tokens" in DF. Pro'ly a programming thing - no mi yob.)

I do know...

cluster - yes.
meanderer is one of several tags/tokens that determine how the creature moves.

Okay, thanks.
So I tripled the population of deer, turtles, and foxes, saved, and upon loading the game noticed no difference.
Do I need to start a new game after editing the raws for the changes to take effect?

I'm going to guess that an initial population change won't do much if you don't regen the world.

EDIT: You should probably have posted this in the Modding forum.  The regulars there could answer these questions in their sleep.
