Flaming dwarves! Even better... mod catapults to fire anything, load him onto said catapult and fire flaming dwarf into the next siege. If you make him a marksdwarf as well, he might get a few flaming shots off before he hits the deck with a hideous crunch.

pwent would be so proud ;D

What if you submerge him in 7/7 water and then turn temp on?

If you ever turn temp on after you rescue him, he will burn.  Magma never comes off of clothes.  Good luck.

Make him a soldier. When he fights the next siege, turn temperature back on.

Actually, this is really making me want to have a variant on the Romans' incendiary pigs :D

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

pushy, you wrote the hyperlink for your War Pigs wrong.

It should be written as...
Code: [Select]
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_pig">Pigs</a>

What if you submerge him in 7/7 water and then turn temp on?

Temperature is off.  Breathing isn't.  He'd drown before you could encase him in carbonite magma.

Yup, during a cave in the floor actually creates a wormhole where it falls endlessly at near light speeds over the one tile, simulating a portal like effect. Eventually it builds up so much momentum it smashes through everything in it's path and sucks down everything nearby, similar to being sucked into a fast-moving train.
Wgat he's trying to say, is that a cave-in creates a temporary black hole. Kind of like LHC might've done...

Well, why not? We already have Dwarven Atom Smashers.

Now we have Dwarven Singularity Generators!

These fortresses are more like historical reenactment for the dwarves. Once you abandon the fortress they all fly home to watch TV and create fusion.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Is there any practical way to tell how bad a cave in will be? I'm considering making a repeatable dustbomb generator through use of an obsidian generator, some way of making the obsidian fall, and leaving a natural floor tile. However, I've heard that sometimes cave ins will just keep going, making this a little unpredictable.

They will go through natural floor tile if it's been undermined. To not go through, the landing point needs to be solid all the way to the bottom, as I understand it.

Actually, I think it just needs at least one solid z-level, like this:

Code: [Select]
================
=======____======
================
=======______====
=======______====
================
================

Each row of ='s represents a solid z-level (no tunnels) and the __ represents a tunnel/room floor. A cavein on the top one should be stopped by the solid third level. I'm not 100% sure on this, so correct me if I'm wrong.
