bottomless pits, tips
« on: July 08, 2009, 07:33:34 pm »

i have heard that bottomless pits can be the source of much death at the hands of cave creatures, there is a giant cave swallow flying around the area.

i want to build a suspended tower fortress in this pit, any tips or advice? maybe stories?

Unless it's an undead flying cave swallow, you shouldn't have too much trouble dealing with it. A squad of marksdwarves should be able to easily deal with it, or you could simply mod away it's flying tag and drop it down the pit. Up to you.

Your masons will drive you mad with suspended constructions unless you take care of any monsters. If they so much as sniff a giant rat that can't possibly reach them, they run away and force you to keep un-suspending whatever it is you want done. Marksdwarves and cage traps are usually good counter measures. You might have to tweak the station position of the marksdwarves for them to have line of sight.

You could simply put wall over the bottom of the put, fill it with a liquid to kill off all the creatures, then release said liquid down the pit or through a fortification dug into the edge of the map. Then you will have a monster-free pit, and can remove the floors or do whatever you want.

thanks for all the replies. i'm going to try and flood the pit and flush it out. for bonus points i'm going to try and catch the cave sallow in the pit before i fill it with a retracting bridge, or would a hatch work too?

I feel I should point out that ratmen can swim, so if there're any in there, use magma.

You need to channel flyers into the same level as cage traps, so they might have to wait until it's almost flooded.  That, or use a bait animal either down a short tunnel or surrounded by 8 traps and hope you get lucky.

ratmen might be able to swim but they cant hold their breath. i'm building a lid on this pit as well, thats how i planned to trap the giant cave swallow as well. build an open "bridge" hatch, wait for it to fly in and then throw the lever and trap it inside, drown it with everything else.

The whole point with the swimming ability is that you magically gain the ability to breathe underwater.

Could be a GCS, be careful. Short of a megabeast or some skarp, GCS are about as nasty as they come, be careful.
