Alternate diplomat meeting.
« on: July 18, 2009, 11:51:50 am »

A proposed adjustment to how diplomats attempt to meet with the fortress.  Right now, if the diplomat's target is unavailable (ex.: the mayor's dead and a new one hasn't been elected yet) he leaves immediately.

The proposed change:

1) He looks for a noble (baron/duke etc.)
2) If there is no noble or the noble is dead, he looks for the mayor.
3) If there is nobody in the mayor position, he looks for the fort leader.
4) If there is none, he looks for the broker.
5) If there is none, then and only then does he leave.

Wow... I just had a brilliant idea.

Item 1: Whoever is meeting with the diplomat should cancel everything else and ignore food/drink.

Item 2: Meetings should auto-queue someone scooping up and bringing refreshments to the meeting.

I like the suggestions above, but imo it would work even better if he wandered down to the meeting hall or the trade depot and waited for a new mayor/broker/whatever to be appointed if no-one at all is available. He could leave after a month or so of waiting, if the player still hasn't appointed anyone.

Diplomacy in general needs an overhaul. It would be nice to know the direction the caravan is coming from and when they'll be there so you could provide a military escort, for example (especially on evil maps). Being able to negotiate with more suitable dwarves would be nice, as would being able to replace dead liaisons (maybe a new liaison comes after a certain amount of profit and gifts, so they decide the risk/reward is worth risking the trip).

Also, until a complete overhaul on job priority is done, it would be nice for the time if diplomacy related tasks were higher priority. Having to take my broker off EVERY other task to get him to even consider going to the trade depot is ridiculous, and while it's funny to watch the liaison run all around the fortress trying to talk to the mayor, it can be a hazard when the mayor is doing something dangerous like... channeling into a river to fill a cistern (had to cut into the channel to get the guy out, half flooding my storage space).

As a side note, I think any liasons/diplomats etc. should be allowed to eat your food and drink your booze. They are your guest after all.

I had a situation, where liason got to the fortress, made his deal and was about to leave, when invasion (or goblin ambush, can't remember which) happened. I closed the exit, moved my military in the middle area, and sealed off the civilians, before opening the exit. Then I sent the military to kill the goblins. The liason was trapped inside my fortress for guite some time, because I had to hunt down all the enemies. Once the threat was clear, I opened the gates to let him leave. He left, and almost reached teh map edge, befre going berserk from thirst or hunger, verntured back and murdered someone before my military put him full of arrows.

If he could have eaten fro my supplies, he would have been all right.

If you are a goblin, you know you joined the wrong siege when the grates come down and bridge raises behind you, trapping you inside.
