I still stand by the wise practice someone on this forum came up with.

1. get king.
2. get king drunk.
3. king falls into cage trap
4. sell king to traders
5. ?
6. Profit

"Quick, kill the king, KISS might come!"

But no, the kings consort only shows up if they come the normal way, and even then they don't replace him.

You mean when the game calculates who's going to be in line for the throne seven generations before they're born?  Yeah, extend that out to near infinity and that's how far medieval Europe planned its royal successions.  I don't recall exactly how they did it, but it was complicated and HUGELY long term planning.

Sorry for the derail, but. The European hereditary structure may have been complicated (though I seem to remember the simple "eldest son" rule), though in reality it quite often came down to "only surviving son", either because of war, or in-fighting. They really weren't quite fond of family bonds back then.

Although, if my poor king had survived, what would be the benefits? I managed to make the dungeon master one of the most important dwarves in my fortress - he's a proficient furnace operator, and that really helps, but what of the royalty?

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.
"Hear me, exalted spirits. Hear me be you gods or devils, ye who hold dominion here. I am a wizard without a home. I am a wanderer seeking refuge."

The dungeon master is a godsend. He sits about all day doing grunt work while other people get on with doing useful things.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

In my personal order of nobles:
1: Dungeon Master, he actually does work without 3rd party utilites, and it's -good- work too.
2: Philosopher, Professional lever puller, requires NOTHING from you but food.
3: The King/Queen, the only noble aside from the Philosopher to not mandate/demand things.
Everybody else: Low tier. :P
