Modding birth rate and immigration growth
« on: July 03, 2009, 10:08:34 pm »

How do I change the birthrate of a species to something like one child per ten years? Also, how do you put a cap on the number of immigrants who arrive, say limiting them to six per 'batch'?

Immigrants seem to be based on the fortress value the caravan reports back to the mountainhome.

I don't think you can make them have children less often, only adjust how long it takes to grow out of being a child.

You can cap only the overall population in the /data/init/init.txt file.
Also by removing the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] you will make dwarves to have multiple children at once more often.

The main problem is that I can't give, say, Elves a birth rate of "one child every 50 years or so, give or take 20 years". Also, I've yet to see any two partners from world gen have more than ten children, though it might be just very rare.

Also:
  • Widows and widowers don't marry again
  • People seem to marry only with others around their age (or maybe their generation, not sure), though I don't see what should stop a 500-year old Elf from marrying a 40-year old one.
  • No bastards that I could find ...

You don't play small or tiny worlds then. There's a lot of "*** is my wife. She is also my sister".

P.S. Oh wait, I misunderstood the word "bastard". No, as far as I know intelligent creatures may reproduce only when married.

In fortress mode, your dwarves don't always marry before having children.

So, Fortress Mode is for bastards!
