Pumping liquids is entirely different from pumping gases, though, since the former don't require an airtight seal; surface tension helps keep liquids from slipping through small gaps. No such luck with air.

Actually, with an Archimedes screw (which is what pumps are in game), you have a lot of leakage.  It's just slow enough that you get some output.

Here's the best image I can find.

See how water leaks out at all levels of the thing, but still makes it to the top?  If it stops turning anything that can't leak out of the tube-end (or over the side of the half-pipe in this case) leaks down through the space between the screw and the pipe.
