Greetings all. I would like to announce a contest I am starting as of today! I have recently completed my first draft of the first story a series called The Chronicles of Clan Stonemane! In order to flesh the story out a bit more I am holding this creative contest. The reward is not cash money or fancy prizes sadly, but your name and your world map WILL end up in ALL the stories I write from this day forward.

Rules : You can create the world map as you see fit so long as you follow several general guide lines and some that are not so general.

You can use any program you see fit. I will judge which one I think is the best, however ALL the maps will be saved so I can show them on a website I am in the process of making ;)

General Features that must be included - The map will be of a large continent. To the south is a large long mountain range that spans from the north east to south west. There are two passes to cross the mountain one in the northeast end and one in the southwest end. Fortress Understars is under this mountain. It is okay to draw entrances and exits from the fotress on the map if you wish.

To the south is a large plains area called the Endless Plains of Glitter. Standing in the middle of the plains is a mountain called Frostbeard, rather far away from the Goldenanvil Mountain Range to its north. Beyond this is an ocean.

Some where to the north west closer to the tropical zones of the world is a vast desert. North of the northeast end of the mountain range is forest which turns into jungle and swamp. To the far north east is another smaller mountain range you can name.

To the far north is a frozen north land. In the middle of all this is where the humans live, and in the north in the snowy areas there are human barbarians. The Elves live in the jungles and forests.

I don't care how you create the map just so long as it is clean looking and you can tell where everything is. Some of the best maps in fantasy books look hand drawn after all :) Amaze me ! Again the winner gets his/her map attached to all future stories and I will use it to WRITE all the future stories.

This is awesome, no way I'm not atempting this.

I tend to be rather good at maps, here is an example of a map I did for some roleplay I GMed quite a while ago:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This was quite a while ago, and since then I've become better and gained a tablet. I will also most likely put more effort into something like this than something for a quick RP. Otherwise the style will be mostly the same, but adapted to a dwarven style.

I'm a bit unsure about the spatial relationships from that description, I'll probably PM a few quick sketshes for evaluation until I get one right and can make a map from it.

I will release a PART ONLY A PART of my secret file so as to make it easy for you guys to draw this map. This is from a file I call Legend Mode where I keep all the info on each character/location/ and event that has taken place so I don't make big mistakes while I writing. I still may make them but this makes it easier to avoid :) Combine this with the info above and if you have any more questions feel free to ask in this thread.

Locations

Fortress Kaden Hurr  - A huge dwarf fortress in the eastern part of the continent. This is where the Kirkstand family comes from. It has slightly different customs than the southern dwarves do but enough alike that they do not stand out. The laws in Kaden Hurr are much more just than those in Fortress Understars and they elect leaders from each clan to form a dwarven republic. They have a separate court system where judges are appointed by the God of Justice through his priests. His priests have no knowledge of the names of potential judges; they go into a trance and call out the name of the selected judge having never heard it before. To date not a single judge in Kaden Hurr has become corrupted or power hungry, though these things can change. Obviously Kaden Hurr is not excited to hear the news when Fortress Understars and Shatteredstone are over run by demons.

Au’alurma – Au’alurma is a distance dwarven city founded deep in the desert waste land. The dwarves from this down have very strange customs and ways when compared to the southern dwarves from the Goldenavil mountain range and further to the south and east. These dwarves are often called Sand Dwarves and take more than one spouse. Often the single leader of the house hold takes many spouses of various sexes, at which point they become glorified slaves of the original dwarf. Many southern dwarves are entranced by these dwarf skinned desert people.  Over the years leading up to the story there has been a general anger building towards this group of dwarves in Understars as many of the existing citizens have been convinced to join these strange marriages and follow the Au’alurma customs.

The city itself is built above and below ground around a vast oasis that many believe to be dwarf made. There are many entrances to the city hidden in the sand dunes around the oasis, as the city itself stretches under a vast amount of desert deeper down where there is solid rock and earth. These entrances are covered from time to time by sand storms, and a sect of dwarves known as a Mu’atal spend their entire lives digging out covered entrances day in and day out to assure there is always a way out of the city proper.

Near the Oasis giant towers of obsidian raise into the horizon, each capped with a parapet that is decorated with design that is unique to the clan who built it. From a distance on a hot day these towers seem to dance on the horizon. As such many southern dwarves and humans have taken to calling this the City of Dancing Illusion. Many people who visit this city never return home. Some say they get enchanted with the city and decide to stay, other say something more sinister is going on. Those that visist and return have no reports of anything ominous going on however, so these remain unfound rumors.

Fortress Understars – Fortress Understars in an ancient Fortress who’s history is carved in the great halls the dwarves live in. The King is Magmabeard IV. The fortress is massive and serve as the home to countless dwarves, stretching across the entire Goldenanvil Mountain range. There are many exits from the Fortress and all of them are well defended by special gate houses that are almost impossible to assault. After all of these years the miners have finally begun to dig to far, and at the warning from the Gods the King has ordered mining to stop.

Fortress Stonemane the Brave/Shatteredstone Goblingrave – This Fortress was founded by Baron Shatteredstone and became very successful due to the initial rush of gold from selling looted goblin gear. The name was changed once Baron Shatteredstone was promoted to Count and moved in to make this fortress his home. As the years stretched on this Fortress became much larger than even Fortress Understars and Count Shatteredstone named himself King!

Endless Plains of Glitter – The Endless Plains of Glitter strech out from the foot hills of the Goldenanvil Mountain range to the south where Mount Frostbeard is found and beyond to the ocean in the south. This was once a giant human civilization that has long ago be destroyed by the Goblins from Tatteredmoon. Very few trees survive and those that do are gnarled and bent by the extreme wind and storms that tear across the plains.

Mount Frostbeard – Mount Frostbeard is a giant mountain that stands so tall the tip is beyond the clouds. No one has ever been known to climb to the summit of this mountain. The goblin Stronghold Tatteredmoon could be found on the southern face of the mountain and has existed there for years beyond history. The Fortress Stonemane the Brave was founded in a box canyon on the northern face of the mountain.

Goldenavil Mountain range – This mountain range has many peaks and streches for miles from north east to south west. Under it is a giant dwarven civilizations living in Fortress Understars. There are two passes over the mountain, one in the south western reaches and one further north east. The elves crossed the north east passage in order to gain access to the Plains of Glitter.

Stronghold Tatteredmoon – This Stronghold has existed for a very long time with Baltrog as the leader of this civilization of goblins. For the longest time they have existed in peace, simply because they killed everyone they knew about. Their society is brutal and has served over the years to make these goblins much larger than those found in other parts of the world. The smallest of the small serve the larger as slaves, whilst the larger hone their crafting abilities to make fantastic armor and weapons. They know one day they will go to war again and they want to be prepared, hence when the dwarves defeat them they find a giant amount of goblin war gear that in turn makes their Fortress rich!

I'm guessing Armok is going to end up winning this since he's the only one doing it ;P Ah well. It is only fitting for a character who played such a huge role in the story to be the one to create the world.

Just wanted to say Armok has been showing me updates of the map he is working on through PMs and it is AMAZING! When I first posted this I was hopeful then no one responded and I realized it was kind of a silly thing to assume anyone would want to go through all the trouble of making a map for a story they've never read. I must say I was extremely surprised even by the first draft of his map which was amazing, but compared to that his newest version looks like something that could go up on google maps as a satellite image! I can't wait until he's finish so we can show you all just how good Armok is at this stuff. I suppose I shouldn't been so surprised, he is a god after all.
