Dismantled wagon, goods not being moved?
« on: June 25, 2009, 11:54:22 pm »

So within the first month I dismantle my wagon to move all of my food/booze into the stockpile next to the dining room, but the food/booze won't be moved by my dwarves!

no, the food is not forbidden. yes, the dwarves have hauling jobs and most are just playing with their beards in their rooms. yes, there is plenty of room in the stockpile and the the stockpile is set to stock everything. I just don't know what I'm missing...

Since you dismantled the wagon before letting them haul the stuff in, it counts as refuse now - go into the options and turn on the one that says something like 'dwarves gather refuse from outside.'   See if that does it.

EDIT:  Actually, I'm not sure that's it exactly, but check that option and see if it works...

No, the items shouldn't be refuse.

Have you forbidden your dwarves from going outside? Are the stockpiles covered with rocks? Try making a small stockpile outside and see if anything gets moved to it.

Um... (how best to say this?...)... lies!   :P

To move stuff, you need 3 things -

1) for the stuff not to be forbidden or otherwise tasked (for dumping, for use, for whatever)

2) An accessible stockpile that will accept the items plus any containers

3) dwarfs who are designated to do that labor - AND decide it's time to do it.

From your description, sounds like you have 1 & 2 covered, so I'd guess your dwarves think they have something better to do.  Try un-designating some of their other labours, see if they resort to hauling when they have nothing better to do.

If they're just standing around, they either

1) - it's a pathing issue
2) - they don't have the labor designated
3) - you've accidentally turned off "dwarves go outside" (or something sim)

I reviewed the idiot checklist long before I came for help. It's fixed now for some reason. I didn't do anything related to the pile, they just ignored it for months on end and then started moving it.

I just did some testing. It seems that whenever I create a stockpile that isn't designated as a food stockpile from the get go (p -> f) then the dwarfs won't move food to that stockpile, even if I designate it as a food stockpile after I place it. Everything else seems to work fine except food.
Need someone else to test this before I submit it as a bug report.

Sounds like the max barrels setting.  By default, a food stockpile is set to accept as many barrels as possible (based on the size of the stockpile).  All other stockpiles (that I can think of offhand) are set by default to zero barrels.  If you make an animal stockpile, (q) over it, (s) to change its settings to be a food stockpile instead, that default of zero maximum barrels remains.  What you need is to (q) over it, and then look at the other settings besides (s).  I can't remember which is barrels and which is bins, but I believe you want either (R) or (V), which will set the respective setting to its maximum value.

Barrels are only used to store food, seeds (and seed bags) and alchohol, so a "food" stockpile is indeed the only thing that uses barrels (besides the odd building like a dyer's workshop.)

... but I believe you want either (R) or (V), which will set the respective setting to its maximum value.

Be aware that maxing a stockpile for bins or barrels will mean that every barrel you have will then be earmarked for a stockpile, and cannot be used to make a workshop/etc.  It also means there will not be a "free barrel" for brewing until every last stockpile tile has a barrel for it, and then you still have more barrels than that.

Also, if you desperately want an armor bin but your 10x10 block stockpile hasn't been filled with 100 bins, you may want to reduce that number, etc etc.  Sim w/ custom food stockpiles.

I like to make my stockpiles at least 1 less container than their size, so I have a visual hint when the stockpile is full (when that last tile gets a loose item put on it, I know I need more stockpiles.)

I had this same problem.  The dwarves wouldn't move drinks to my drink stockpile, and the barrels just kept piling up in the still.  Then I realized max barrels was set to 0.  Oops.

Also keep in mind that designating a stockpile over an existing stockpile doesn't overwrite it, you have to remove the original one.

Er, are you sure? It doesn't work that way for me, I have a very wood-constrained fortress so I'm rather low on barrels, but I have a number of huge food stockpiles which are set to allow the maximum number of barrels (and are mostly empty). Everything I've ever seen suggests that stockpiles that take barrels or bins always try to keep *one* empty barrel/bin in place - as soon as an item is placed in the empty barrel one more is claimed for the stockpile (acquires the stockpile number in its name if you 'k' over it in the furniture stockpile) which will then get hauled over there at some dorf's leisure. If more than one barrel in a stockpile gets emptied, then one of them loses its stockpile number and can then be used for brewing immediately (if it doesn't get tasked for hauling to a furniture stockpile, obviously).

I've never seen the stockpile number on several empty barrels not already in the stockpile at once, and have never had a problem brewing or doing any other task even when there are hundreds and hundreds of empty food-stockpile tiles and only ten or twenty empty barrels...

I've had that issue before. Custom (p->c) stockpiles never work for me, I have to designate a specific type of stockpile then adjust it. From the looks of it, either the custom stockpiles are bugged or you ran into issue number 3 - dwarves just didn't feel like hauling crap around. There's a reason most fortresses have 1/4-1/3 of their dwarves doing nothing but hauling, it's that important of a job (and, like most menial labor, doesn't pay jack when your economy kicks in).
