quick question (sorry!) last stable release?
« on: June 27, 2009, 04:52:49 pm »

Hello everyone.

I have been here reading practically every day, but haven't posted much.  Vive le lurker!

My being here doesn't mean that I've been paying attention, however; what is the most up to date but stable (i.e. playable, especially in adventure mode) version?  All this 40dxx is confusing!

I've not been playing for a while, but the past few dev_now items have fanned the dormant embers of my interest - so now I've got to indulge!

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Bad thoughts in advance for anyone who criticises my general flakiness.

Cheers! ;D

Are you trolling? Has it occured to you to go to the main site of the game?

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

The stuff you read in the dev notes will not be in that version though, and neither will it be in the xxd versions, which are first and foremost ports to osx and linux. The latest stable version is almost one year old.

How are they "first and foremost ports to osx and linux"? They're tests of new rendering code for the next "normal" release, and they're quite a bit faster, especially for people with older graphics cards.

40d9 was actually quite stable, but I'm not sure where you could get it now. 40d12 is the most recent one, but there's still a few problems with it. 40d was the last "normal" (stable) release, that's on the link asper posted.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Thank you, unintelligent, for the help.

No, I'm not trolling asper (and I'm mildly irked at the suggestion).  Perhaps I should've said "playable" rather than "stable" ?
I've got 40d sitting in my hard drive, with several interesting worlds.  I don't really need pointers to the "main site of the game", thank you very much, as I am quite familiar with it.

I guess I didn't make myself as clear as I wanted to in my post.  I've been a long time player, but stopped some time ago in anticipation of a new version that didn't come quite as quickly as I would have liked.  Now I've got the urge to play again, and was looking to get the most up to date of the many many 40dxx versions that would be worth the time to find/install.

(I'm not expecting the features on dev_now to magically appear in an old release; rather, the "don't start anything big a new version is coming" feeling has finally been overcome with excitement and general love for the game.  If nobody helped me find a "better" version then I'll just be firing 40d up again)

I've seen talk of problems with the latest version.  Reading through the whole 40dxx thread (a great deal of which is too technical for me) seems rather daunting, so I thought I'd make a post here to see if I could get some help.

Y'know, I DID apologize in the thread title for my presumptiosness... *grumble*

40d12 is the newest version which is found here: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=28841.0
It's playable but I don't think it's as stable as 40d is but it has the added advantage of running faster. So if you have no problem with the speed of 40d then there's no reason to get 40d12 since it doesn't add anything, it just makes it run better.

This game could honestly give out hand jobs for free and people would still bitch.

To be clear: the 40d# updates have no gameplay changes whatsoever.  They're just meant to run faster.  If you already have 40d, there isn't any new content that you're missing out on.

40d11 is pretty darn stable on both the slow machine I'm using now and the faster one I use at home.

Uh, sorry for irking you. I found it a strange question, since the text on the main site clearly states in big letters: "latest stable version", and you were asking for exactly that. The xxd ones are testing versions (with no gameplay changes), just as it says in the name of the topic  ::)

As has been said, the xxd do not contain gameplay changes. Also, adventurer mode does not work with 12d (works with earlier ones though).

The DF pages aren't always consistently updated, meaning s/he's right not to take "latest stable version" at face value, and the 40d# releases DO occupy a confusing middle ground between test releases and real releases.

::)

Don't do this.

I don't agree that the testing releases are a 'confusing middle ground' between full releases and testing ones. The intentions of the coders in releasing them are made clear in the thread.

Not that this matters though.

ps.  ::) ::) ::) ::)
