I know it isn't that useful of information, but I thought I'd post my discovery anyway.  ;D

Well, in every one of my forts since I can remember them, after the expedition leader is elected mayor, the job next goes to one of my miners.  I always thought this was just some strange phenomenon, until I actually bothered to examine my miners' attributes.  The one with the highest attributes was the mayor.  But, since in my current fort he/she is in their first term, I went to check in my 2 previous forts where they had been reelected.  And the same thing had occurred-the miner with the highest visible stats (and therefore most likely the most experience) was also the mayor and had been reelected at least twice.

Based on the fact that my miners are always the strongest, fastest, and toughest people in my fortresses, my hypothesis is this: After the expedition leader's term as mayor expires, the job of mayor goes to the dwarf with the highest experience total.

Anyway, I figure that the dwarves are only marginally less wasteful of metal than they are of wood. The moody dwarf's selecting only the best 5% of each bar of metal, and eats the rest to sustain him as he works on the artifact.

How many friends did your miners have?

I think the best we've put together on how the mayor is elected is: number of friends + lots of other random factors.

Although this might help explain why children who grow up in the fortress always get elected mayor. Training eight skills constantly by chatting would give a lot of experience.

Recently, I had a mayor elected that wasn't my mayor/expedition leader for the first time.

It was a peasant with all no-label social skills. No friends either.

He didn't have the highest social skills, and certainly not the most friends or attributes.

My current fort's mayor has been reelected for about a decade. Same dwarf was expedition leader when they first struck the earth. She doesn't have more friends than the other starting seven, and is romantic with no one. I have left her with no hauling labors so that she might use the time off to chat with whoever is throwing parties or on break. At sixty dwarves, she has been making some new friends. When the dungeon master arrived, they both made friends real fast.

Nice having sometone to talk to when the peons are working. I would really like to see that mayor get a husband though. My two miners wed, and the carpenter and the mason. And the growers take their pick from immigrant peasants.

I have never seen any reason in other forts why the mayor loses an election.
