How much to pay off the elves?
« on: June 21, 2009, 04:23:10 pm »

Being that they're one of my main sources of wood on my magma-free map.  The liason died the first year but they learned I'll buy lumber off of them.

So will giving them offerings actually accomplish anything?  They don't think much of me as I've deforested the map and a few elven caravans spawned into goblin ambushes.

It certainly couldn't hurt

Also make sure they have a very high profit margin.

The  closer your depot is to the world map the less distance they have to travel into goblins. Station your military nearby and use lever bridges or something to keep goblins out once they're in.

Set up random cage traps all around your world, goblin ambushers are tough to spot but clumsy as hell, you'll probably be able to make them visible  pretty well if you set up right. Once they're visible, send the bulk of your military to destroy them.

As for making them happy, sending their caravans away with a ton of profits and large gifts to their druids will probably make them more inclined to "forget" that you mercilessly annihilated the forests and failed to keep your own borders safe.

BTW: HOLY CRAP! I didn't realize elves sent liaisons, is that something unlocked when you get a certain noble.

Yup, the baron, however he doesn't ask you what you want, he just demands that you stop cutting down trees and makes short jokes. Needless to say the average elven liasion doesn't have a very long lifespan...

That's true.  There is a bit of prejudice against elves in the dwarven community.  It's always an interestingly rare case when you get people that are willing to admit they like elves. ;)

"Stop cutting down trees OR ELSE"

I do, but that's because they seem to like me ALOT-two tame giant eagles, a giant desert scorpion, and five big cats in successive caravans. Hard not to like them after that! Oh, and i forgot the breeding pair of cougars and the black bears. (As it turned out, my countess had a cougar bone fetish. She was easily satisfied when she wasn't demanding adamantine.)

Haha!  I honestly never bought into the elf prejudice.  But wow...it is REALLY strong around here...I've never actually seen so many elf sympathizers in one place. :P

This might work.  Nobody on my map seems to spawn consistently in the same place, but especially elves and goblins.  And they seem to have a knack for picking the same spot.  They really don't stand much of a chance.

Last time the elven diplomat spawned, then "an ambush, curse them!"  Fortunately for him, he must have been superelvenly agile, as he outran their aggression range in less than a quarter of the map.

The elven liason I had visits from since the start, you just get the stupid diplomat that whines about trees when you get a baron  ;D  Why can't he be like the human diplomat?

"Nice place you have here."
"Well, I'll be seeing you next season!"

humie diplomat really does diplomacy in a dwarven noble way, doesn't he? ie fairly simple and timewasting.

i don't trust the elves further than my drawbridges can throw them...oh, i trust them quite a lot. they brought me a grizzly! and they are easy to see off so...yeah...

Don't buy them off, just let them come and siege you a few times - slaughter them mercilessly, and they will send a new diplomat asking for peace. You can then decide if you REALLY need that wood, or if you want to keep killing elves instead.

Well, the humans sent a diplomat asking for peace in the 2d version anyway. I don't really know for sure if the elves will send one in the current version. But, if not, you still win because that just means you can keep killing elves!

FWIW anyone who says give the elves low profit margins - don't bother with that. Steal all their stuff instead, they will keep coming back and giving it to you anyway and it does not effect the amount or type of things they bring as far as I can tell.

Uh, I can tell you from experience that their profit margins DO matter. Low profit margins seem to result in me getting alot of rope reed cloth, and the idea that they still come trading to you after you repeatedly seize their goods feels downright exploitive in either case. Good profit margins, especially with caged animals, seem to result in more caged animals. Not neccessarily good ones, but they still bring pets. Also, he needs them for wood, and caravans generally get larger as you give them larger profit margins, elves included.

The 2 dozen logs is worth the hassle of siviculture as I'm on a magma-free map.  Not that I'm lacking in green area and legendary woodcutters.  Its the shrub pruning that kills all my time  :-\

They did bring me a black bear and leopard early in our deals, but haven't brought anything cool in a long time.  I give them good deals, because, wood is cheap to start with  ;D  I think its the numerous naive elves lost to goblin ambushes that keeps their numbers low.

Now the humans, they send me like 6 wagons + 10 mule riders anymore :)
