Population Cap Not working
« on: June 25, 2009, 04:15:47 pm »

I have [POPULATION_CAP:40] in init.txt

The last migrant wave (which brought a king with it) raised the population to 49.

Now I just got another migrant wave, even if its above the 40 its meant to be.

The pop cap is a suggestion.  You'll want to set it lower than you really want it capping at.

How much lower?  Nobody's quite sure.  General understanding is that mostly, if your pop is under the cap, you can get one more wave, and if it's over the cap, you only sometimes maybe once in a while get one more wave, perhaps.

Well I'm used to a wave overshooting the cap, but this time the wave happened WHILE the cap was overshot

Yeah...Happens sometimes.  It's a pretty widely known bug though.

I'm curious:  Did you lose a caravan sometime between the first and second waves mentioned?

Umm nope, but the King went berzerk and was killed by the caravan guards

My guess would be that you triggered something that made the king come when you were below the cap. And the game had already decided to send new migrants before the trigger happened.

Ok let me rephrase it because maybe I wasn't so clear.

I set my cap to 30. I reached a bit over 30, then realised I could support more population, so I raised it to 40.

I also struck adamentum, and with the next wave the king came, with some migrants, which went over the cap.

The king went berzerk and was cut down, but the population was still over 40. Then I got another wave just now.

Several times I've had an immigrant wave arrive after I'm already over the population cap, but I've never had a *second* wave come under those circumstances. This (and other people's reports from the forum) leads me to suspect that immigration is determined some time in advance and thus it's possible to go over the cap this way. Of course, it could just be coincidence and something else is going on... :)

One thing that could cause this is that, if you are far enough away from the mountain home, an immigration wave can take so long to reach you that it may be on it's way when you hit the cap.

Also, IIRC, the immigrants are triggered by caravans, so if a dwarven caravan left while you were still under, that could trigger a wave that may arrive after you are over.

And both these can happen, so, in theory, it should be possible to get 2-3 waves after you've hit the pop cap because of the delay involved in the immigrants 'knowing' you are over.

And sometimes, Armok just wants to make you suffer.

And by suffer, I mean build a death machine to offer up blood to Him.  ;D
