Dwarven Civ with No Forts?
« on: June 23, 2009, 11:32:12 pm »

I was well into this one map, enjoying my luck of having sand, obsidian, a magma vent, surface and underground water when the Caravan arrived.

And an Outpost Liason did not arrive. I checked the Civilization page and sure enough, the default dwarven faction I picked has nothing except a Queen. I yanked my 'just started at this site' backup save, abandoned, and checked the civ page. Yeah, this faction has no holdings anywhere visible on the map.

Does this mean I have to re-gen a world in order to get trade agreements with my own faction? I really don't want to abandon this fort because of something like this. =/

Yes, but you can live w/out trade agreements.

It's possible that if you use the same world seed, but change the History seed, that you'll get the same map with different civs - I've had it save situations like the one you are in.

Get used to checking everything in the embark map - Civs status first.

Curious -- what would happen if you regenned the world with a different history seed, and then copied all the unit info from that regenned world into your existing fort? Would it be possible to combine the structure of one fort with the greater world of another?

Obviously you'd want to back everything up before trying this.

You may not have to resort to such drastic measures. Surely the faction you picked is not the only dwarven faction? If not, choose another.

If I already generated the world, how do I get the world seed? I checked the seed pages on the wiki and got nowhere. I even started frankensteining some files together from multiple saves in hopes I could 'delete' the fortress and return to a fresh map.

Is it possible to change it on the fly? There are three other dwarven civilizations, and I assumed this one had a fort when they were able to give me Bauxite in my starting package.

Foxbyte: open your active fortress, hit escape, and export some images. Along with the images will be generated a text file containing your worldgen parameters.

That's a pretty round-about way of doing it! I spent an hour yesterday trying to open files in TextPad, then abandoning a back-up copy to see if the seed was listed pre-embark> Thank you Derakon, you are a king.

Edit: I dug out the seed stuff like you showed me! Figured I'd post them here if you were all curious.

   [SEED:785630800]
   [HISTORY_SEED:534030486]
   [NAME_SEED:1117810740]

If you search for a 4x4 site with flux, magma vent, and an underground lake it should land within a few tiles of the place I picked. :)
