Hehe, this is awesome.  I like your descriptions of events.  I quite sympathize with your search for that underground pool.  I lost a whole fort when I failed to find my underground river.

Keep it up!

Huh.  I though macabre moods needed dwarf materials.

Cool story.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

--Year 4-- Early Autumn

and so as one Army returns to their homeland. . . another takes their place.  Rotated out from lack of supplies or lack of children to maim and kill a new group has arrived.  All on horseback with a championspearman to watch over things.

It's been over a year since we've seen a piece of wood, since we've seen a drop of water.  Dwarfs go unhappy from being pestered by bugs or simply seeing the sunlight.  Yes, in fact we have forgotten the feel of the sun and have been driven to the deep of the Earth.

During the height of our siege and the spiraling poor moods a dwarf made a statue in honor of these dark times.
"Hoofnegates"

Yes, we Dwarfs Negate the existence of the Human Cavalry, and shall live our lives to the fullest deep underground.  We've placed the statue in the central hall as we party as the humans die of boredom out on the land above.

Our Eastern tower rises slowly back towards the sunlight which we will reclaim.  As we raised it yet another floor the head mason suddenly stopped moving, as if petrified by the rays of the sun.  However the suns rays gleamed something else that left the other workers calling for the Expedition Guard to rush to the scene.

However, as the Guards arrived they found themselves overcome with sickness as the bright light shawn upon them.

At this time, thankfully, the Spider poses no risk and construction continues.  With the spiraling morale and the planned beginning of construction on the magma pipe tower, where magma may spill onto any dwarf working at any moment:  Things may turn nasty in a heartbeat.

The story behind the 3rd Artifact:
"The Wasp of Requirements"
A mason.  As he cut rocks into square blocks for the continual drive to construct the towers was possessed.  As his eyes crossed and his lips turned purple; he groped towards the masons workshop, his pale face whispered hoarsely that he needed rough gems, stone and tree life.

Captain of the Guards Zuglar crossed her arms, a soldier was sent to the battlements to check on the 30 + siege force.  The Spearlord was far to the west in the open fields, the Macelord was far to the north on the mountain slopes.

The Woodcutters were told to get ready to run out, cut down some trees and run back.  The Captain of the guard and her 5 swordsmen waited at the Drawbridge as it lowered over the dry moat to the outside world.  They rushed out into the outside air - only to have Solon vomit uncontrollably and Litast run off into the mountains after a piece of leather armor.

Both the woodcutters were yelled at to get out and chop down some trees, but one was enjoying his plump helmet wine and the other was eating some plump helmet seeds.

Litast found his leather greaves, next to the Human Axelord who gave chase.

Finally a woodcutter stumbled outside, chopped down a single tree and went back inside to sleep.  The Captain of the guards called mission accomplished and everyone ran back inside, including Litast who bested the Macelord in a foot chase.

The order was about to be given to raise the drawbridge, when Zuglar noticed something.

"Wait!  We're missing someone?  Who isn't back?"
. . . There was a pause . . .
"I think it's the new Mayor Kadol!"

The Human Cavalry Charged towards the drawbridge, chasing down the mayor.  The Mayors wife and 2 kids watched from the inside with tears in their eyes.  The mayor ran himself ragged, breathing heavily, he clutching a piece of olm leather in his hand.  As he ran into the fortress the drawbridge was raised and not one soul was left outside.  The mason used the Ash wood to laboriously construct:

--Mid Autumn, 5th year.--

The magma has drained away, the pipe empty and our masons are hard at work.  An accident has caused one to slip and fall into a fiery death.  But all other hazards have been removed.

The human siege is broken, The new Marksdwarf squad, the oracular guides.  Created solely for the task of fortress defense in siege time.  They took down a host of horses the humans rode upon.  As the humans could find no means of counter attack, they departed.

Proving their worth, this new squad took down the giant cave spider infesting the bottomless pit as well as the host of fire imps that blazed within the magma pipe.

As the humans departed, trade once again began to flow and a Dwarven caravan arrived.

But is all well?  Unfortunately not.  Morale is at an all time low.  Feeding off the same food and drink, miasma from corpses, deaths, forced to toil in the sun of the pipes as they empty the paltry food they survive off of.  The working class is near to rioting.

The Oaken lashes, our fortress guard protected the traders as a goblin ambush appeared.  Quelling the surprise attack with their obsidian short swords they took no losses.  But a Goblin Snatcher - startled by running into a herbalist at work outside the fortress - stabbed her heart and fled.

As The Captain of the Guards returned, she saw the tired eyes of the fortress inhabitants.  Too upset and worn out from years of labor to even cry.  Maybe I should try to improve morale.

There was more than one snatcher though.  A few days later an "ambush" of snatchers appeared, 4 of them all at once trying to sneak inside.  Revelations were made, fingers were pointed.  The snatchers were after the kid of the late herbalist, Olin.  The kids been miserable, throwing tantrums as of late, kicking her pet horse.  So we nick named 'er  "Goblin Loved."

--Mid Winter, 5th year.--

Goblins have replaced the human war machine.  Rising to the occasion we opened the drawbridge to harvest the forest.  The wood is needed for our many screwpumps and after 6 months I'd estimate we only have 10% of what we need.

After a number of deaths from the goblin's, I've retreated back inside.  The mess creating problems of its own.

From all the deaths, one was Goblin Loved's father and another was her sibling.  An unfortunate but necessary loss.  The kid has spent his last 6 months of his life doing nothing but start fist fights, throw things topple mason workshops and do back flips.  The kid is already perfectly agile, extremely tough and strong.

The towers are being flushed out, many floors remain unbuilt.  But we'll get there in good time.

A new mayor is elected.  For the worst possible reasons.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't believe it. . .  moments later the captain of the guards comes running down from guard duty to beat the stuffing out of the mayor.  Breaking his wrist and mangling his lower body.
