The Longest Journey

I have the DVD edition. This thread is for discussing the game, and for getting the game to function on Vista/7.

I haven't tried on Windows 7 yet, obviously, but it will be available soon. As for vista, getting it to function properly is actually easier than it seems.

First, one must have the DVD or 2 CD version, the most recent retail release. The Steam version should work immediately, though.

Second, download the most recent patch from the official website, version 1.61. Install it.

Third, disable hardware acceleration in either the configure program that came with the patch, or manually edit the prefrences.ini.  Under [DirectX] in the preferences.ini, change all the lines to read as below:

[DirectX]
GfxDriver=display
int_BitDepth=32
bool_IsDoubleBuffer=0 (Important)
bool_UseHardware=0 (IMPORTANT)
bool_StartFullscreen=1 (or 0 for windowed mode)
bool_ForceSingleBuffer=1
bool_ShadowsOn=1

Doing this made the game function properly for me on Windows Vista. Of course, it's an old game, and these settings do mean that there will be no Anti-aliasing, but at least it will run.

I didnt like it too much. I found it too full of plot holes and loose ends, and of things that did not make too much sense. My impression is that the developers bited more than they could chew when designing the game, and thus it ended up being half-completed.
