Sad to hear of this projects death
« on: October 01, 2006, 03:37:00 pm »

I gave it a go last night and I really liked what there was... Now I feel kind of sad that this project is dead because it showed the promise of being something I've really wanted to see for a long time... a MMORPG-like game for single play... (when I say that I mostly mean the crafting skills and the open gameplay.)

Even if DF adventure mode does end up with a lot of those functions  I don't think the feel can be done with a roguelike (at least in my opinion) as the 3D world and visuals are a large part of the attraction.

Oh well... DF is a great game in it's own right and I'll continue to enjoy that one.

Yeah, I really liked the original Ultima Underworld, being trapped inside a cavern, pretty well free to wander around and try to survive, and the 3D really helps with that feeling.  At the same time, I'm going to try my best to evoke that in DF...  it's not going to be easy, but once lighting and temperature and living off the bodies of creatures go into adventure mode, it should be possible to squeeze some of it out of there.  I have been really immersed in ascii roguelikes before, on occasion, so I think there might be some hope for it.  I'll probably end up throwing adventurer after adventurer into some cave and tweak it repeatedly to go for that mood, but it won't be until more of the underlying framework is in, especially fire, lighting and some of the survival skills.  Climbing, jumping and swimming would probably help too, although scaling a vertical cliff in ASCII is a bit rough from the display perspective, unless there's an alternate view.
