They will go insane without alcohol.  All is lost if they don't get it.

Do not underestimate psychoterapeutic powers of statues, waterfalls, forges, etc.

You can't make bedrooms without beds.

This.

A bedroom is defined off of a bed - nothing else.

All the advice to ignore them is fine until you're clawing to avoid a catastrophic tantrum spiral - then the smallest bad thought might be the make/break point, and all your dwarfs will be on the wrong side of "not sleep in a decent bedroom".

But right up until that moment, it'll be jus' fine! 8)

I think the other thing that having a bedroom helps is being able to own your own items.

They'll still get stuff, they just leave it strewn all over the place if they don't have a room to put it in. I think any assigned room will do: bedroom, tomb, office, dining room. Maybe even a private zoo or statue garden, not sure about those 2 because I've never had one.

Bedrooms can also keep dwarves from sleeping in places where they shouldn't. Like for example, I had a dwarf (was a hauler I think, don't remember exactly) who fell asleep right on a channel designation line which the miners had already started on. I thought the miners were going to end up channeling under the guy but the noise may have alerted the dwarf when they were getting close and he/she got out of the way.
