Minimum skill requirement for certain materials, tasks
« on: May 06, 2009, 04:44:44 am »

I was just reading the Murphy's laws for DF topic in the General Discussion and a peculiar law said that the most skilled craftdorf will use the cheapest materials, while the least skilled will use the rarest materials. So, I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I didn't find it at the Eternal suggestion voting thingy.
Well, one thing would be the ability to reserve certain materials for certain skill levels via the Z menu or the manager menu, in the same way we can reserve workshops. Another thing, that I'd like to see even more, personally, would be skill requirements for using certain materials in crafting, smiting, cooking etc. E.g. you'd need at least an expert leatherworker for making anything out of dragon leather or a professional furnace operator for making steel. This would add challenge to the game and value for the lower-end materials.
This concept could be extended to item types as well. A dabbing smith would have to practice with small trinkets before he can craft a chain mail or even plate armor.

So, what does everyone think? Worth an entry into the eternal voting thingy?

Certainly, go ahead. It can be done by either standing orders (reserve all platinum bars for the most skilled craftsmen) or integrating it with the economy (dwarves need to buy their raw materials).

The problem with integrating it with the economy is that rich dwarves are not necessarily highly skilled dwarves...  :-\

I do like this suggestion, though.  :)

We'll get the chance to change the price formula, sooner or later. Quality would have to play a large role in price for it to work, that's true.
