Yeah, same in Scotland where its 17 to learn to drive etc. I'm 19 and havn't bothered but I am thinking of learning purely cause if it were an emergancy or something and i had to get somewhere fast the busses or taxi's just wouldn't cut it.

But the coming of age thing just doesn't existed here (as far as i know). We have a decent public transport system so we don't need as many cars as the american's do.

Not at all...at least I don't care that X person got a car or not. Unimportant stuff to be honest.

Eh, Cambridge isn't bad.  Very cyclist friendly, shouldn't be necessary to get a car for a while.  Most of the centre of the city is pedestrianised anyway because the roads are crap and hopelessly inadequate.  If I want to go down to London, taking the train is a lot quicker (but more expensive.  The public transport here is equally bad).

Buying a car is indeed a mark of adulthood. Your parents buying you one, however, isn't.
