Use marksdwarves and cats to reveal them. Also, for simple fun: build wooden supports holding up the floor. When the last SOF reaches the end...BOOM. the floor above crashes down on them.

You can stop them. Wall up the pit, don't try to floor over the pit part, it's impossible to accomplish before they surge. I think.
Just build defense, release, enjoy.

Oh no, they already surged and they died. I haz adamantine, and a lot of it (700 units of raw adamantine is a nice stockpile). However, I still get intermittent FPS problems, and the occasional single demon keeps appearing. If I floor over it, will it stop those single spawns?

Okay:

1) The demons spawn once and only once - when you breach the pit.

2) They do not spawn from the actually pit itself AFAIK

So basically, after you kill the demons you can use it as a glorified bottomless pit.  I like tossing garbage down it since I know that it's probably hitting some demon on the head.  As for why they are still appearing, they are probably just working their way out of the pit.

Then...where do the random other demons keep coming from? I've had 6 soldiers stationed in the pit for the last...heck, two years and they've seen a few spirits of fire appear with the Horrors! message.

They are still stealthed, running around in your fort. If you see anything melt mysteriously, it is because of them.

I've been looking around. I don't see where they could be. I mean that literally--they'd have melted a dwarf by now. They always unstealth right by the pit, too.
