Hmm, this is interesting, I just followed a river to the edge of the world and found that in the last screen leading up to the edge, the water just steadily disapears. The last 5 squares are only 1/7 while there's 7/7 only a tile or 12 away. There where also about 10 fish corpses at the 4 tiles bordering the edge, I picked those up and I'm going to kill something with them, but that's off topic.

In all seriousness, i think the edge of the world is an inpenatrable barrier, much like your size of site in fortress mode.

Core44 proves that there's other lands on the other side and that migrants can pass between the two worlds.
Quote
Core44, OVERLAND TOWN MIGRANTS, Completed: If towns become depopulated (by an adventurer perhaps!), migrants can appear on map edges or seashores from seas adjacent to map edges. These groups can enter towns and join with existing towns (possibly at a low allegiance level). You can meet these groups in adventure mode.

This game could honestly give out hand jobs for free and people would still bitch.

So the edge of the genned world is like a barrier for the player, preventing the dangerous adventurers he or she creates from escaping to the rest of the world.

It is Armoks will that we do not wander into lands ruled by other gods, for he is jealous. if we were to pass the barrier to other lands, his wrath would desend upon us all, so those who we tell to cross for us avoid doing so for our sake, though they would stab themselves with a sword dripping with fresh lava if it were our will.
