(40D11) Crash problem...
« on: May 27, 2009, 01:23:06 am »

First off it's not vanilla DF. I'm running Vista (Some problems alone with that). I'm running the orc mod and I have a modded in creature. On the Orc mod I changed the breeding bit to 50-100 in a litter.

I'll be happily playing DF and out of the blue it freezes. I'm on year 2 of the fort now. I have not seen a single Orc, but I do see my modded race, so I know they're working.

I've thought that it could be a siege that shows up with such high of a breeding rate. However on a reload of the game, it doesn't lock up at the same point. It could be after 5 minutes of playing (that's the shortest it happened) or a few hours (seems to be the regular)

I do have a lot of on map monsters due to magma pipe (volcano), chasm, bottomless chasm, HFS, a river, an underground river, GCS's, etc. The terrors has a breed rate of 50-100 as well, but they never cause issues except at start-up where it drops frame rate to 20 and then it goes back up after about 10-20 seconds.

Mysterious freeze, reload and no freeze at same spot, no siege yet... I'm guessing it could be Orc related. I keep closing my fort off to keep my 15 dwarves safe.

Was the breeding rate the ONLY thing you changed?  Does this reproduce with your current raws across multiple embark sites / worlds?

I have similar issues of totally random crashes. As far as I can tell it's independent of what fortress I embark to, though the one I'm on right now I managed to make it through almost a year of play without crashing before the crashes came back. I'm running OSX 10.4, and while I'm using Legendary Lands now, before I was just using the basic raws. I reported this awhile back but nothing seems to have come of it.

Yeah, breeding rate is the only change to orcs. The other creature is more or less another antman but much more gruesome.

I have the world gen stuff changed around a bit too, but I don't think that's the issue.

I want to say it's the orcs besieging my fort, but I do not think that's it. -shrugs-

I am running a Quad-Core think that could do it?

No, it's not your quad-core.

What happens when you generate a new world and embark on it?  Do you still get the crash, or is it just that one embark site?

Alright well I ran a new install of Dwarf Fort to make sure nothing would crash. I'm guessing it's just Vista being stupid, because I never had this problem when I was running XP.

When I first started a fort, at least for the first two seasons, it kept crashing at random and very close together. I had all background programs that I could shut down, off. I'm not sure what else to do.

It seems to have stopped now though, so I guess I'll live with it... I've adopted saving very often...

Vista?  Did you have the game installed in Program Files previously?

It's getting close to summer.  Is it extremely warm where you are?  High CPU usage + warm room is a recipe for overheating, which can mean crashes.  Maybe.

It cooling is no problem, it's under a ceiling fan as well. It's an open shelf spot on the desk. It's one of those metal tube /w glass desks. So cooling isn't the issue.

It's always been on the desktop. It's weird because I haven't changed any settings from when it ran fine. It's running fine as well now.

Know of any background programs or processes that run, that might crash the game?

The computer is very clean as well, so that's not an issue.
