Yeah, I may have actually undermined the area and not noticed it. It definitely wasn't trees though. It was up in the mountains, no trees in sight.

So ramps collapse if you dig more ramps under them without clearing them all out? good to know before I get started on the next floor.
No, digging a ramp under a ramp removes the one above just like it removes ground.

If you designate multiple levels of ramps at the same time you're gonna end up with some walls on the upper layer that didn't get dug out before they started digging ramps under them and that would cause colapses.

Albedo: why would anyone bother with that? If there's only flat ground above what you're ramping then you can't ever get collapses because if it's a wall it's good for support and if it's been turned into a ramp they removed the floor above it.

(Because that's exactly what I understood the OP to have tried, and it failed for him. This is (more) foolproof.)

(falling 1 z level only causes unconsciousness,).

I had a legendary miner digging out a section of land, with ramps, to clear it for a road to run through, no section had more than 2 spaces of land on the higher z level...

Kinda Like that

Miner was crushed by a falling ceiling.
A section of cavern has collapsed.

Boom! Scratch One Legendary Miner.

I haven't tested this extensively, but I have reason to suspect that cave spider silk causes cave ins when it's above the ramp being dug.

Out of curisosity, why are you digging out a large area? Exploratory mining is far more efficient if you're looking for ore or gems, and there should be very little risk of a cave in, if any..

I'm clearing out a giant pit for me to build a tower out of.

If you can do it one layer at a time, it's 100% safe. Put your access stairs outside the designated area so they never get removed.

Good luck.

I guess I'm not comprehending the problem right. You're using ramps to remove a z level and the floors/walls above it? You could disable cave-ins, mine out everything you need to mine and collapse and then military your dwarves and get them the hell out of the way and then re-enable caveins and it all crashes down.

I thought you were talking about a...

x=wall o=floor >=ramp

1Z
XXXXXXX
X>>>>>X
X>oooo>X
X>oooo>X
X>oooo>X
X>>>>>X
XXXXXXX

XXXXXXX
X<<<<<X
X<oooo<X
x<oooo<X
X<oooo<X
X<<<<<X
XXXXXXX

The 1z level would collapse because ramps don't support anything... ever.

but if you're talking about using it as removing a small hill... trees possibly might cause it, but i've noticed when i collapse large plots of land with trees, the trees vanish with no logs, so do plants.

I guess if web is special that might cause something.
