Halfway through the first year in my new fort I realized I had orcs in raws. I like to use a bridge/spike combo that looks like this to combat orcs during my first year.
(viewed from the side)S=stairs s=spike b=bridge f= fort entrance

My first winter and the orc siege dies pitifully as usual. Next spring elfs arrived and unloaded their goods. As the peasant is out hauling wood he spots an ambush RIGHT ON THE FUCKING BRIDGE. I draft the peasant and order the lever to be pulled. The farmer got to the lever just in time killing the goblins and the recruit. as soon as the ordeal is over I reclaim the items and the elves embark from the trade depot in the fort. Right as the elves and 4 dwarfs cross the bridge to the stairs another ambush appears RIGHT ON THE BRIDGE. In a panic I order the lever to be pulled/repeat. As the dwarves/elfs hightail it back into my fort with the goblins in chase the floor drops from under them. Now the goblins are between the dwarfs/elves and the exit. I draft the dwarfs but right as I unpause "Urist thenonmilitary dwarf has been impaled on spikes! Bomrek thenonmilitary dwarf has been impaled on spikes! Deduk recruit has been impaled on spikes!". SIX dwarfs and all the elves died from that stupid mistake, 2 of the dwarfs decided to go grab the goblins clothing while everyone was running back into the fort. The farmer started to tantrum from losing so many friends and his spouse and stopped pulling the lever. The bridge was up. The remaining goblins killed one other dwarf then scattered after I pushed em out, but the tantrum spiral has already begun. Last time I make a statue garden in the first year.
Most Fun I've had in a long time.
