Suicidal Dwarfs?
« on: May 24, 2009, 06:27:17 am »

For some reason my dwarfs keep going down the stairs in my well room and into the flooded reservoir below, then cancelling " store item in bag" because of dangerous terrain. I've checked every square down there, there's nothing that could be stored in bags. I also selected the entire area and forbid all the items, just in case they were haling rocks for some reason. And yet they still go down there. Any ideas?

On a completely unrelated note, I want to know if there is a way to designate a one-way corridor, as I have two separate ones running parallel to each other, and I don't think digging out the space between them will alleviate traffic.

Is there another entrance to the well?  One that they may be trying to path to?

I'd look at placing a hatch-cover over the stairway and locking it to prevent access, except when you want them in there.

One-way corridors?  No.  You can make one way doors, which use pressure plates on each side: one to unlock a door as a dorf approaches and the other to lock it as they leave... but such a device is useless as a dorf won't deliberately path through it.   (The pathing sees the door as locked and ignores the pressure plates that would unlock it.)

Your dwarves disagree with you. Try <d, b, f> and area-forbid the whole thing, see if anything lights up.  Or install grates/hatches/something to just block their path.

No one way.  Next time, build corridors 3 tiles wide.

before D11 I placed a pressure plate before a door into a legendary dining room, somehow they got in...

Next time, before the dwarf cancels the job, pull up the job manager (hit 'j') and view the job in question. It'll tell you what item needs to be stored, though you won't be able to zoom to it. In any event, that should give you some clue as to what's going on.

However, to my knowledge the only things you can store in bags right now (that aren't generated into a bag at the outset) are seeds.

Wait, did you have a sandpit where the well is now? One designated by zoning.

Why aren't there one way doors?
We have them in RL, and I'm fairly certain they predate milling. (Or geothermal)

I guess there might be some exploits, but I can't think of any off-hand that wouldn't be counteracted by the incredibly annoying downside of having to manually let them back inside if used for exterior doors.

And, of course, there is the balancing factor that big monsters can knock down doors, regardless.

I mean, I suppose the door need not be one-way, while attaching a one-way mechanism could be easier to implement.
