Imp appeared inside my fort
« on: May 27, 2009, 03:09:22 pm »

I embarked on a map with an aquifer and a magma pipe, my plan being to use the infinite sources of magma and water to create an Obsidian factory. Problem is, an imp just appeared in my stockroom. Being this early in the game, I have no military squads and have barely begun to set up my traps.

Is it normal for imps to just magically appear inside the fortress? I thought they could only come from inside a magma pool or pipe.

i THINK only vermin spawns... so the imp should have come through some hole.
Do you have some magma-smelters? did you dig the tunnel for the magma and did not seal the access-stairs? Just wild guessing.

I did tunnel down from the top to find the vent, I suppose he could have climbed out the top and down four flights of stairs, but I didn't think they would go that far and didn't see him come in.

I haven't set up my magma economy buildings yet and when I do I always use fortifications or magma-proof grates to keep the imps out.

Set up a cage trap, and use him to construct an impzooka.

Did we ever decide how to go about doing that?

Is it normal for imps to just magically appear inside the fortress?

If you believe in magic, then yes, it's normal.  If you believe you are infallible and your fortress is hermetically sealed, then yes, it's normal.

I am reminded of the flood "that just came out of nowhere!"

You have an opening to the magma in your fortress somewhere.  Your magma forges, an open stairway near the vent, something.

Just send a couple wrestlers in - don't be a pussy.  A single untrained wrestler can take out an imp reliably, and they only get 1 firebreath every (x = long) time period.  You're in a bad situation - loss of 1 dwarf (probably just get wounded) is a deal.

If you can do the cage trap thing, so much the better.
