Wealth....

Find your most valuable resource, then make statues/crafts whatever out of it, to increase fortress wealth....

Or, start making dwarven syrup roasts, and store them somewhere behind a locked door. Food gets extremely valuable due to the way the multipliers work.

Do you have aceess to obsidian? Obsidian crafts are quite valuable, as are crafts made from economic stones. If you do, I would set up a few craftshops and set crafts, toys, and instruments to repeat. Make sure you also have the wood for bins though, since you will need bins to save time hauling.

From Mr. Welch's 1350 things he is not allowed to do in a RPG:
148. There is no Gnomish Deathgrip, and even if there was, it wouldn't involve tongs.
171. My character's dying words are not allowed to be "Hastur, Hastur, Hastur"
218. No matter my alignment, organizing halfling pit fights is a violation.
231. I am not allowed to do anything that would make a Sith Lord cry.
240. Any character with more than three skills specializing in chainsaw is vetoed.

It's good to note that mechanisms are worth 20% more as a base value than statues - and levers and mechanisms have their own innate attractions...

While much of my platinum/aluminum/gold ore goes into statues, and some gets smelted into bars, much of it also goes straight into mechanisms.

The only way to provoke a siege from a civ is to kill that civ's diplomat/liaison.

Can't you also lie to the elven diplomat? Tell them you'll respect the trees and then don't?

Yes and no - "disrespecting the trees" is a vaguely defined crime in their eyes. Amassing 100's of logs will sometimes do it, but from all reports nothing is guaranteed.

I heard somewhere that although the tree thing really pisses them off, it's the lying that sets them over the edge.
That's a secondhand account, though, so it could just be slightly random, or that an accumulation of slights will eventually lead to war. individual players only remembering the straw that broke the camel's back might lead to ambiguity like this.

Provoking a siege from the elves won't solve his iron supply problem though...
